Woman gives birth with transplanted uterus! - IroningBroad - 10-05-2014 http://www.cbsnews.com/news/world-first-baby-born-to-woman-who-got-new-womb/ snip: LONDON -- In a medical first, a woman in Sweden has given birth after receiving a womb transplant, the doctor who performed the pioneering procedure said Friday. The 36-year-old mother received a uterus from a close family friend last year. Her baby boy was born prematurely but healthy last month, and mother and child are now at home and well. The identities of the woman and her male partner were not disclosed. "The baby is fantastic," said Dr. Mats Brannstrom, a professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Gothenburg and Stockholm IVF who led the research and delivered the baby with the help of his wife, a midwife. "But it is even better to see the joy in the parents and how happy he made them." ------------------------------------------- I would definitely donate my uterus to help someone carry a baby!! I wonder if this would work with transgendered people down the road??? RE: Woman gives birth with transplanted uterus! - HairOfTheDog - 10-05-2014 Modern science and medicine is truly amazing. I'm not sure about someone who's transgendered from male to female being a candidate -- the article says the Swedish woman had healthy ovaries and so she was able to conceive with the transplanted uterus. The uterus transplant sounds like a difficult and risky procedure, but maybe it'll become less so with advances made through experience? Looks like doctors worldwide are committed to making it a viable option for more women. Brannstrom and colleagues transplanted wombs into nine women over the last two years as part of a study, but complications forced removal of two of the organs. Earlier this year, Brannstrom began transferring embryos into the seven other women. He said there are two other pregnancies at least 25 weeks along. Before these cases, there had been two attempts to transplant a womb -- in Turkey and Saudi Arabia -- but no live births resulted. Doctors in Britain, France, Japan, Turkey and elsewhere are planning to try similar operations, but using wombs from women who have just died rather than live donors. RE: Woman gives birth with transplanted uterus! - Maggot - 10-05-2014 I think I would just adopt. There are to many kids out there that need a good home. Black, Asian, White I really don't think it would matter. RE: Woman gives birth with transplanted uterus! - username - 10-05-2014 (10-05-2014, 12:34 PM)Maggot Wrote: I think I would just adopt. No. Those people that have nineteen kids and counting should have stopped a long time ago and adopted about 15. Having had in-vitro myself, I get pissed when I read people saying that infertile couples should "just adopt". Everybody should just adopt but being selfish creatures, a lot of us want to experience pregnancy ourselves and give birth to a biological child or two. That said, I don't know if I would have taken it that far. I guess somebody is going to be among the first few and later, it may be an easier, less expensive procedure. Right now though it seems pretty drastic. Then again, I'm old enough to remember the first "test tube" baby and what a big deal that was at the time. |
