LOSING YOUR ELECTRIC - Duchess - 01-22-2017

Do you have things on hand to use in case of loss of power? I'm talking about things other than candles.

I was just looking at some of the new battery powered lanterns and they now come with USB slots. So cool.

What's the longest you've been without power? Got a story?

I worry cause I have to use oxygen 24/7. I did have a portable but it broke and company won't fix it because it is discontinued.(battery operated)....Medicare won't pay anymore. so I have approx a 6 hr emergency tank and that is all....i could rent portable but would have more out of pocket expenses and would have to give notice and you don't always know when power goes out....so far. so good.....ice storm was a bust so power wasn't affected....but it is always a concern. my plan would be to go to emergency room after oxygen depleted...my home concentrator is electric of course.....

I would like something like this for my home.

I keep a small generator fueled up and 10 gallons of gas as backup. Its not a large one like Biggie posted a link to, but it will run my frige, a couple lights and a small heater or cooking device [like a toaster oven or hotplate]. It was inexpensive insurance to food loss or pipe freezing should the power be out for a extended length of time.
Living out here where I do it is common that power goes out several times a year. Longest was 6 hours [truck snapped the power pole off in bad weather] down to just a few moments of power loss.

The longest I've been without power was a week during the Blizzard of '87. Back when I was living in Hoosick Falls, in junior high school. Our family used candles and battery powered flashlights. Lots of crabbiness and getting on each other's nerves. It was one the longest weeks, second only to every work week that I work the full week.

About a month after the hurricane. I really only care about AC. I hate being hot, especially while trying to sleep. I can get a flashlight, a cooler and cook on the grill, that's not a big deal to me. But I do not like sitting around with it all muggy and humid, that sucks the worst.

Fuckin' aye. A month without electric. I'd go mad.

My propane might last a month. After that the generator stops running. Its quiet though.

I was out about a week once, 3 or 4 days several times.
I have a small generator, many battery operated lights and oil lamps, coleman stoves etc.
The penny will run the fridge and a window shocker. Fridge really only needs to run a couple hrs at a time.
Before a storm I load the freezer with water bottles, they keep from having to run it any more than necessary
Being in telecom I have access to big generators and can recharge the big batteries I have for my ups to run other shit if necessary
Thats how I kept my salt aquarium from crashing when the power was off for 4 days, ran the pump for a couple hrs at a time from a battery powered inverter
