TOOTH decay is now the third most common reason children are admitted to hospital, official figures showed yesterday.
Nearly 37,000 kids a year are kept in with cavities ⿿ topped only by those with chest infections and premature tots.
Decay was not in the top FIVE reasons five years ago. Admissions are up 13 per cent since then.
Tories blamed a lack of NHS dentists, saying many went private when new Government contracts were launched in 2006. Shadow health minister Mike Penning said: ⿿Labour⿿s decade in charge has resulted in a significant deterioration in dental health.
Dr Nick Goodwin of The King⿿s Fund health think-tank added: ⿿Dentists are leaving the NHS in droves as they make more money privately.

i've seen a lot of what is referred to as "bottle mouth" here in the states also. kids are put to bed nightly with a bottle of juice stuck in their mouths for hours like a pacifier
. it eats away at the enamel.

I thought only babies drank from bottles, not toddlers...Isn't that a little old ?... I've seen that kinda thing too and the moms always, always look so friggin' low class...I hate to say it like that but, it just looks so bad.

A local girlfriend of mine (who happens to be british), has a little girl who is about 2.5 yrs old. The little girl has pretty bad tooth decay. She had to go in and have have her teeth either capped or extracted, depending on where they were. She had to be under general anesthesia to do it. Here's the kicker though, these people are health freaks. She's the wife of a D.O. and they eat all organic, fresh foods. I think the little girl even had fluoride drops and STILL the tooth decay problems. ::dunno::

I think besides for poor brushing and eating habits, it musthave something to do with being hereditary. It's not normal for the teeth to rot like that under any conditions except maybe if you're a hardcore meth addict.

Poor dental hygene and a sugar laden diet does contribute but is not the only reason.
