FARM TO TABLE - Duchess - 08-13-2023

Could you raise an animal that would be killed in order to feed you?

As long as it wasn't named.

My father won a steer in a Team Roping event when I was a kid . . . a white-faced Hereford.  He became my "pet".

At the time, he was raising and breeding Angus (about 100 head) for sale.  We all new these were beef cattle and, when butchered and aged, we enjoyed them.

I never saw Garrett as one of the beef cattle.  I understood the difference between the two.

And I cried and refused to eat any beef from our freezers, for over a year, when one day I found out he went with some of the Angus, to the butcher.

I didn't speak to my father or brothers for 6 months.

I was seven years old (and it still hurts thinking about it).

I think you need to have low-grade consciousness to do that sort of thing, which goes hand in hand with materialism, in which everything is valued according to it's usefullness with no regard for the innate value of life; hunting, on the other hand, I have no issue with.

My uncle had a calf that I would feed crab apples to, that thing would follow me around like a dog, I would use it like a pillow and take naps, yup they butchered it. This is the evilest cousins known to man, they would try to get you to pee on hotwire, slap the horse you are riding with just a cushion saddle and bail rope bridal, shake the outhouse and other fun stuff. Had to heat up the water for the bath on a stove...

Sorry, but I couldn’t help to laugh that his name was Garret, I guess it’s because I know someone named Garret. And yes I’d still be upset too, I cried when my pet eel died for god’s sake.
