Ketchup - MirahM - 09-20-2024

I made my own ketchup tonight. Its pretty damn good.

Do you use ketchup?

What sort of things do you make instead of buying in the store?

RE: Ketchup - BigMark - 09-20-2024

I make my own Blue Cheese dressing because I can't find it here, used to love Bobs Big Boy dressing...

Not a fan of ketchup. I buy all my sauces and dressings. Ranch, bleu cheese, tzatziki, etc.

Yes, I use ketchup and I always try to buy the smallest size one to buy. It lasts forever. I use waaaay more mustard than ketchup.

I can't think of anything that I make instead of buying. Making is hard!   50

I'm more of a mustard person. I make my own salad dressings and they are always superior to the bottled stuff.

RE: Ketchup - Carsman - 09-21-2024

Like Ketchup (has to be Heinz) on Burgers, Fries, Fish, scrambled Eggs and home fries.

RE: Ketchup - BigMark - 09-22-2024

They put mayo on fries here, so gross.

I love my fries dipped in mayo.

RE: Ketchup - BigMark - 09-22-2024

I bet.

RE: Ketchup - MirahM - 09-22-2024

So many people like ranch too. I haven't tried making that since it usually requires buttermilk.

Cars I bet you would like homemade ketchup.

I put ketchup on eggs too-not all the time, just when I want to be nostalgic. And on Mac and Cheese too.

When we were in PA- Amish land we ate in a Amish restaurant called Millers. Everything there was "homemade" including the ketchup, it was ok, but I like Heinz better'

RE: Ketchup - username - 09-22-2024

Why the hell would u make ur own ketchup? I can only imagine it’s puréed tomatoes, maybe some brown sugar and red wine vinegar. Then u could spice it up with cayenne pepper or add a little ground mustard and garlic or onion salt but WHY???

There’s every type of ketchup on the shelves (no sugar, low sugar, all natural, reduced sodium…).

U have too much time on ur hands. Besides, the ingredients would cost more than the bottled stuff unless (maybe) u grow ur own tomatoes and stuff.

People are weird.

Because I live in a remote place where I have to order groceries a day or 2 in advance and it costs an extra $12 for them to be transported on a boat and so I don't order groceries until I have a substantial amount of things to order.
I can't just go to a grocery store. The best I could do is ask a restaurant for some, but I rarely plan to make grilled cheese sandwiches when I get home.

The only way to get to where I live is by boat, sea plane or hike. Or helicopter. So yeah, after 3 nights of making grilled cheese sandwiches w/ no ketchup I decided to make my own.

RE: Ketchup - BigMark - 09-23-2024

You can't ketchup to him.

Wut?!??! Do u like it there?  hah  Where (if u don’t mind disclosing) are u? And how long have u lived there? I admire that although I know I’d go bat shit crazy after about a week of living remotely like that. I remember a 10 day visit to Kauai which was lovely for the first 5-6 days and then I couldn’t wait to get off of what felt like a spec of dust in the middle of the Pacific. I rarely visit cities (I’m perfectly content in the suburbs) but I NEED grocery and convenience stores around me (and DoorDash for restaurant deliveries). Good for u.
Are you like super zen and an earth goddess from ur lifestyle?

I mean I'm happy making my own ketchup and others around me are canning everything, making applesauce with the apples from the local public orchard and making cider and everything. So I feel like i have a long ways to go before feeling like an earth goddess.

I am in the North Cascades. I've been at this location for a year and 1/2. I lived at another location 34 miles from here for 2 12 years.

It does drive me crazy sometimes, but the pay off is the beauty of this place. Its amazing. When I do go into town to do my own shopping (every other month or so) I buy a bunch of junk and eat a bunch of junk food.

I love it here.
Thx
