WELFARE & CHRISTMAS - Duchess - 12-11-2010

How do people on welfare have Christmas? I know there are charities that help a bit because I've worked with them before but they are not given a great deal because there are just so many of them & there has to be enough to go around. I know what I spend & I want to know how people who say they have no money do it.

this is what I have been talking about, Christmas is not about the commercialism, money spent or gifts given or received.

get away from that shit and maybe then you will know what is really important, and exactly how the poor can really enjoy the real reason for the season.

as well as how the poor do not experience the post christmas depression that is so fucking prevalent in today's society.

I guess you wouldn't approve of my lil' stocking that says, "No Candy Just Cash" then.

RE: WELFARE & CHRISTMAS - Cracker - 12-11-2010

hahaha, Duchess. You kill me.

People were bitching locally because they saw families selling the gifts they got through charity on ebay and at the swap meet. They should just give them cash.

I feel badly for homeless children. Not their fault they were dealt the bad hand of fucked up parents.

RE: WELFARE & CHRISTMAS - bampton - 12-11-2010

Every year our office picks a family through DSS to sponsor. Usually it's a single mother with about 4 or 5 kids, all from different sperm donors. You should see the crap the office buys! Video games, clothes, grocery cards. I haven't had a raise in two years because of the shit hole our local government dug themselves into and they're expecting me to give? Fuck them. Every year I refuse to participate. I won't donate my hard earned money to a human-mine only goes to animal organizations. Merry Fucking Jesus' Birthday.

He makes a valid point.

Folks who get stuff for free rarely have "buyer's remorse" or worry about paying for shit they don't need or "wants" they can't afford.

RE: WELFARE & CHRISTMAS - Lady Cop - 12-11-2010

i really do feel for the children of the poor and addicted and shiftless and stupid. they see the same Christmas hype and TV and commercials all the other kids see. they believe in santa. i want them to have a few years of believing in santa, probably the only light in lives that will be total shit. just for a few years let them be little kids with sugarplums and reindeer in their dreams. and also tell them the true meaning of the day. in whatever terms they can grasp. it's a lovely story even if the parents don't believe in it. LET THE KIDS HAVE SOME MAGIC for a little while before going back to their dismal reality.
if i could i would personally see to it that all those little kids had a Christmas tree with a few presents under it. i give when i am SURE that's what the money goes for. Toys for Tots, Cops for Tots and other great groups.Mini xmas tree

The church I go to "adopts" a couple of families for the holiday. We buy food for a holiday dinner...a turkey or a ham..and fixings. Then small gifts for kids. We are not talking Ipods or anything, just games or toys. The gifts are more so the kids do not feel different from the other kids.

I feel badly for the kids too. One of my son's friends told my son that he won't be getting any Christmas presents this year. I've met the parents once or twice--I don't know what their story is but they come across as kinda icky, lol, but they've also got a teenage daughter who is battling cancer. I'm not sure what we would do (or how we would do it--I'd rather remain anonymous) but I'm thinking about a little gift for him and maybe a gift certificate for a dinner out (something for the family). Or, maybe a Target gift card would be more practical. I dunno.

Several towns in our areas have Christmas parades each year- the only 'charge' for participating in the parade is a toy valued at about $10. All toys (and money donations) go to needy kids in the area, supervised by DHR and another agency, so everyone's held accountable. The parade we did last week had about 30 floats and other entries; the toy run following it had about 250 bikes, each of which donated at least one toy as well. The bikers gather afterwards at a Biker Apprecation Day, where they're treated to a lunch with door prizes and entertainment- any donations made there also go towards toys for needy kids- mostly bigger items like bikes, scooters or skateboards.
Most bike clubs I know of do at least one toy run a year. Local churches also try to each adopt a needy family- clothes and toys for the kids, basic groceries to last a while, plus a small turkey, hen or ham.
The kids can't help what they're born into- and I know of at least one situation where helping a family challenged the older kids to do better for themselves, so they help someone else.

RE: WELFARE & CHRISTMAS - Maggot - 12-11-2010

I agree with tricky dicky, I spend very little at Christmas and going to the nutcracker at the local opera house is usually the highlight. My kids love classical music. And Taylor Swift.

My husband and I take the kids to a Christmas tree farm every year--we cut down a tree and have apple cider. It's a tradition.

And then we spoil them rotten at Christmas.

Wow. I feel like a total shit heel. I'm such a fucking scrooge. You guys made me feel like I need to rethink my reasons for not giving.

i don't think you're a scrooge Bampton. i think our attitudes about welfare in general influence the replies to this thread. maybe 'the poor at Christmas' is less inflammatory than the welfare crack queens and welfare abusers at Christmas. the thing is to separate the innocent kids from their lowlife parents.

RE: WELFARE & CHRISTMAS - Cracker - 12-12-2010

Kids can't help their situation. We had a boy over last year that got kicked out of his house and didn't get to grab any of his belongings. We gave him a duffle bag full of clothes my son left. He cried right in front of me. He had been wearing one pair of shorts for over a month. Poor damn kid. I hope he isn't cold today. We lost track of him because his piece of shit parent won't pay her rent.

RE: WELFARE & CHRISTMAS - bampton - 12-12-2010

Poor kid. Situations like that break my heart because the kids can't comtrol what happens to them. They're so dependent on their lousy parents. I hope that boy is ok.

LC it was your comment about being able to give a poor kid the opportunity to enjoy the magic of Christmas is what got me. Or that not being able to have a Christmas at all may single them out among other kids. I never thought about it that way. Ugh. So sad. Kids deserve to have that in their lives.

RE: WELFARE & CHRISTMAS - Duchess - 12-12-2010

Little kids probably wonder why Santa doesn't make his way to their 'hood.

I am totally speechless. I actually had to sit on my hands so that I would not put my fist through the monitor.

i did a little research of the breeding sow:

2010
TAMPA - The last time we saw Angel Adams, she was getting out of jail on contempt charges. The Judge releasing her because all 12 of her minor children are now in protective custody.

Adams had already made headlines for lambasting social workers for not doing enough after they gave her thousands of dollars in assistance and arranged a new home for free.

Now, more trouble, only a day after Adams' release from jail. Deputies say Adams, in front of her children, became profane and abusive with shelter workers.

Deputies were called, and Adams was trespassed off the property, losing her right to visit her children.

Court papers say Adams got angry when a social worker referred to herself as the children's 'house mother'.

Judge Tracy Sheehan repeated Adams words, "Quote, she ain't your mother ****** momma, and who the ***** do you think you are having them call you mama?"
