PD: Woman tries to take fake bomb on plane

PHOENIX -- Authorities arrested a woman who allegedly tried to take a fake bomb onto a plane at Sky Harbor International Airport.

At approximately 10:30 a.m. Friday, Luwiza Laku Daman, 51, began walking through the security gate at Terminal 3 and placed her carry-on bag onto the X-ray machine.

A Transportation Security Administration employee noticed an item that looked like an improvised explosive device inside the bag, according to Sgt. Steve Martos with the Phoenix Police Department.

Officials shut down the checkpoint area and the bomb squad and Hazmat personnel were called to the scene.

Upon closer inspection, it appeared that the item consisted of a paste-like substance in a plastic container with a cell phone taped to the top of it.

Bomb squad officers determined it was not an explosive device.

"We're approaching the 10-year anniversary of 9/11," Martos said. "We are certainly cognizant of that date and our awareness is a little more heightened because of that and so we're taking this seriously."

Martos said Daman is a refugee in the United States and not from the Phoenix area.

Daman told Homeland Security detectives that she had obtained the item from a friend. Daman said Shullu Gorado had asked her to take the item on the plane and give it to another individual in Des Moines, Iowa, which was her destination.

Officers arrested Gorado Friday evening at an apartment complex near 19th Avenue and Camelback Road.

Gorado told police that he obtained the object from another person and admitted giving it to Daman to take on the plane with her.

Gorado and Daman are each facing one count of knowingly giving a false impression.

Police are going to have the substance tested to find out exactly what it was. Officials are still investigating the hoax device's origin, purpose and destination.

According to court paperwork, Daman and Gorado might have been testing airport security protocol.

I just flew out of Minneapolis/St Paul to LAX and back a couple of weeks ago, and I will say that I thought the security personnel at both locations seemed very much on top of things.

I'm glad that they seem like they're on top of their game. I do believe these two were conducting a 'trial run' to see what they can get past the x-ray machines.

With the 9-11 anniversary a month away, someone's bound to try and do something.

It's not safe to fly.

Well, actually, it's very safe to fly. And, I sincerely doubt anyone will be successful at sabotaging a commercial aircraft. Plus, I have tix for Hawaii in January, so I REALLY hope you're wrong.

Why does your opinion carry more weight than mine?

If we had security like Israel it would be safe. We don't. It's not safe to fly. I don't care if you gamble with your life & the lives of your family.

Because I'm heavier than you, that's why.

Hahahaha! Good answer!

I'm not worried about the people getting on the plane, I'm more worried about the people putting the luggage on the plane.

Good one.

There is a law against absolutely everything now. If you suggest there is anything wrong with a US food product you can get 25 years but if you feed somnething you know is contaminated like fish loaded with sodium tripolyphosphate to your child you can get charged with "giving a false impression". Of course no one is pointing and talking about child endangerment.

In this particular case I strongly side with the government since this could have been an attempt to check airport security. But surely there's a real law based on a real moral code that could be dusted off and used for them. Why not just arrest them on suspicion of espionage.

I suppose we can now get 20 years for asking the stewardess for a Pepsi.

i had a very best friend in the Keys, Pam. she was nuts, like most Keys residents.
so one day i took her to the small airport in Marathon to get a plane to Miami. she was on her way to PA. to visit family and was taking a box of Keys/Caribbean lobsters we had caught, packed in dry ice. so the airport security cop asked what was in the box. Police

well i have to tell you, i nearly fainted dead away when she replied "a bomb". JESUS H. CHRIST!! i knew she was joking, but within 5 minutes she was being taken to the Fed. Pen in Miami! agggghhhhhhh!! i couldn't believe it came out of her mouth! i still laugh about it.
i guess the Feds bomb squad blew up the lobsters. Brainexplode 28

Every time you hear a bell a Buddhist is crying.

Honestly, those two are fucking stupid. They deserve whatever charges they get. I have a feeling their charges will be upgraded when they figure out what they were really trying to do. Or maybe not since at least one of them is an Obama supporter. The White House may try to bury this one. It's bad when your fans plot to blow up a plane at the beginning of the election cycle.

They arrested a third person, 34-year-old Shani Asa. They are all from Ethiopia and Eritrea (next to Ethiopia).

Eritrea has already been accused of terrorism: "The UN experts also said Eritrea was arming and supporting insurgents in Somalia, including the Shebab group linked to Al-Qaeda."

Are Africans the new terrorists?

I'm going to start an airline just for white people. We all know white terrorists only bomb buildings, so we should be safe in the sky.

Revoke their refugee status and return them to the enemies they evaded. Be sure and let the folks (the ones they ran from) know they're coming.

Ungrateful fuckers.

I hate flying but the world is a very small place if you're relying on an R.V.

I fly because if I didn't, I wouldn't visit places like Hawaii, Italy, Cabo San Lucas etc. I'd rather fly with the risk than have a tiny bucket list.

You're more likely to die in a car crash by the way.

You should be a counselor, Miss Sensitive.

You are more likely to die in a fire right now, I think.
