CASH OR CREDIT - Duchess - 10-19-2012

How do you spend your money? Pull cash out of your wallet or swipe your credit card? Do people still use checks?

RE: CASH OR CREDIT - LuciferLynn - 10-19-2012

I always use cash via a debit cards. Having an actual credit card is much too tempting for me and not as easy for me to keep track of what I'm spending. I rarely ever have actual cash on me.

Always use credit card here. I get "6" % back on supermarket, 3% back on gas, 3% back on department store, and 1% back on everything else. (Always pay entire bill at end of month, so no interest charges)
Last year I got back $712. They pay me to use the card, so. . . . I do.

And yes people still do use checks, and it's always at the supermarket. Where they have to fill out the check, deduct it in the book, then hunt in handbag for wallet, then get out licence. Ugh!

RE: CASH OR CREDIT - LuciferLynn - 10-19-2012

I was at walshit a few weeks ago and someone tried to pay with their debit card but it didn't work so they wrote a check. She must not do it very often bc the cashier had to show her how to fill it out. I know for myself, a box of checks lqsts over two years. I write them mostly for school functions.

RE: CASH OR CREDIT - ramseycat - 10-19-2012

I used my debit card for almost everything. I pay all my bills online. I very rarely write a check. I have a special card from the court where my child support is deposted I usually take the money off it in cash and use it for groceries and stuff. I leave a little bit on it since that is the card I let the kids use for xbox and stuff.

RE: CASH OR CREDIT - Jimbone - 10-19-2012

I'm with carsman... pay for everything with credit card. I think last year I got the max cash back, so yep they paid me $1500 to use their card last year to boot!

I rarely have cash on hand... probably write 10 checks a year in total.

I've never used credit cards like they want us too, and have paid it off every month since I can remember. I live by the rule that if I don't have it, I don't spend it.

RE: CASH OR CREDIT - username - 10-19-2012

Yep, credit card for points but we pay it off every month.

I just cashed in 150,000 points to fund our airfare to Cabo in November.

BTW, Duchess, I heard an interesting statistic yesterday. We're having meteor showers in this area and an astronomer on the radio said there's a greater probability of getting hit by a meteor than dying in a plane crash. I forget the numbers he used but I imagine the plane crash possibility goes up if you're a frequent flyer. I'm not sure what my point is; maybe you ought to invest in a good hardhat?

Not a week goes by that I don't think about flying. I could be down south in about an hour versus 19 hrs. of driving.

RE: CASH OR CREDIT - LuciferLynn - 10-19-2012

If it takes longer than 6 hours, I'm on a plane.

I know exactly how you feel about flying - have missed out on so much. My first flight was when I was a senior in college and a company out-of-state paid to fly me there for an interview and spend a couple of nights. I was scared to death to fly but once on the plane I loved it. Everything was so gorgeous. Oh the other hand, on the flight back a couple of things happened that terrified me, and I knew I would never fly again.

The next time I flew was 46 years later to San Francisco to visit my son and his wife last October - (husband and I just can't take driving out there again even though I'd love to). Took one Zoloft and one Valium (per doctor's instructions) which really helped my trembling body. I've witnessed loved ones suffering so much before the end that I tried to convince myself if it's time to go, I'd rather go fast. Know that sounds ridiculous but after all, I am an old woman and won't live forever. We are flying there again Nov. 1 - 12. Keep your fingers crossed for me - I still have the fear, but w/o the medicine I took, I don't think I could do it. Just start shaking too much.

I wonder what the odds are of dying in a plane crash caused by a meteor?

Astronomical?

All I know is I'm watching the sky the next few days for office building sized rocks. The guy on the radio said it could happen with very little warning. He also said, unlike what they portray in the movies, we wouldn't try to blow it up. That would just create giant shot gun pellets.

He was very doomsday. Smiley_emoticons_slash

Thanks so much, User, for posting this. Now I get to add worrying about meteors smashing into the plane!

When is this meteor shower supposed to end? You are in CA, right?

I know!! He was comparing a good sized meteor hit to setting off all the world's nuclear weapons at once. Niiice.

I think the shower is expected to peak Saturday night.

Thanks once again. How encouraging to one who is already afraid to fly. Just keeps getting better and better.

Haha! Just take your medicine. I have to take medicine to fly too. I've posted this before but even with the meds I still think I'm going to die. I just don't care so much. Smiley_emoticons_slash

I think now that if I have the opportunity to go someplace really wonderful I would drug myself & go. I wish I could have decided to do that when I had the opportunity to go to the Canary Islands with my friends. I spent a stupid amount of time berating myself over that.

You should. As much as I hate traveling back and forth, I'm always glad I went. Vacation memories are awesome!

ETA: One thing I still try to avoid is flying during snow or thunderstorms. We don't get many out here though so it's usually not an issue. I wouldn't fly to Maine for Christmas though.

*gulp* That said my 99 y/o grandma in Maine is fading. I hope she lives longer than that but at least until spring!
