HOW WOULD YOU HAVE HANDLED THIS? - Duchess - 12-14-2012 "Yesterday my mom posted a picture on Facebook of my 5-year-old brother Sam wearing a pair of shoes he picked out for his first day of preschool. She explained to him in the store that they were really made for girls. Sam then told her that he didn’t care and that 'ninjas can wear pink shoes too.' However, my mom received about 20 comments on the photo from various family members saying how 'wrong' it is and how 'things like this will affect him socially' and, put most eloquently by my great aunt, 'that shit will turn him gay.'" Story RE: HOW WOULD YOU HAVE HANDLED THIS? - username - 12-14-2012 "That shit will turn him gay". Haha! When my son was younger (slightly younger than 5 as I recall), he wanted his nails painted and I have a picture of him where he was goofing off wearing his sister's bathing suit. It didn't bother me at all. But I think the parent could have found some creative way to have their kid wear something else without crushing his little identity or anything. I don't think it's wrong that she let him wear them (at all) but I probably would have found some other way to accommodate him just out of concern that other kids might give him grief. RE: HOW WOULD YOU HAVE HANDLED THIS? - Maggot - 12-14-2012 Thats funny as hell. I say fuckit let him wear what he wants. (I would let him jump in a big mud puddle first) RE: HOW WOULD YOU HAVE HANDLED THIS? - Jimbone - 12-14-2012 I know there has been talk that there is a gay gene or something like that - which I think is utter crap. However, if there was such a thing, that kid has one. RE: HOW WOULD YOU HAVE HANDLED THIS? - Eat Shit And Die - 12-14-2012 I woulda said "ok Alice have whichever ones you want" RE: HOW WOULD YOU HAVE HANDLED THIS? - username - 12-14-2012 (12-14-2012, 12:18 PM)Maggot Wrote: (I would let him jump in a big mud puddle first) See? That's creative! One parent commented that if the kid was enamored with the zebra stripes, she'd color them in black. RE: HOW WOULD YOU HAVE HANDLED THIS? - HairOfTheDog - 12-14-2012 I wouldn't have posted it (or anything else) on Facebook. If he was my child and really wanted those shoes for some reason, I'd let him wear them at home and if he was running around with me. But, I probably would have steered him towards ninja-type shoes for school since he likes ninjas - it makes me really sad when little kids get crushed or don't want to go back to school because other little kids don't know better than to laugh and make fun of them for being different. If he was in high school and wanted those shoes, I'd not interfere - his informed choice at that point. RE: HOW WOULD YOU HAVE HANDLED THIS? - SIXFOOTERsez - 12-14-2012 Pretty funny. Tell the kid to man up and wear cowboy boots and tell everyone else to fuck off RE: HOW WOULD YOU HAVE HANDLED THIS? - FAHQTOO - 12-14-2012 He's either going to be gay or not, and that's not even relevant here. What is relevant, is that fact that the stupid mother just set her son up for years of endless bullying. It should be legal to slap the shit out of someone just for their stupidity. HotD is right...let him wear them at home. Why would she purposely throw her kid to the wolves? And then post the shit on Facebook? I want to punch her!! RE: HOW WOULD YOU HAVE HANDLED THIS? - sally - 12-14-2012 It's clear that he's already gay just by the way he looks, just let him wear what he wants. RE: HOW WOULD YOU HAVE HANDLED THIS? - blueberryhill - 12-14-2012 Oops, my message disappeared. I am forever pushing wrong button. Re JimBone, #4 above, what is your expertise re being gay. Homosexuality is certainly not a choice, it is genetic and when scientists get closer to proving that theory by discovering a genetic component, you call it "utter crap." Some of you are so judgemental of others. If they ever do a remake of Mean Girls movie, they can do their casting here at Mock. I enjoy the antics of some of you as you have great sense of humor and i laugh myself silly. The gangsta talk was so funny. However, some of you are truly mean-spirited. I simply believe in equal rights for all citizens. I will ignore those that will attack my comments as I don't give a shit that you disagree. RE: HOW WOULD YOU HAVE HANDLED THIS? - crash - 12-14-2012 Kids are born innocent. Adults fuck them up. Classic case. Edit: sorry , and to answer the OP, sure the kid does look a little in touch with his feminine side. But so what? It won't stop him doing just about anything he wants to do in life, only the stigmas created by society and resulting pressures from those will do that. The only way to change those stigmas is to push back against them. Let the kid have the shoes. Who really cares? If kids tease him for it, it is not wrong that he was allowed to wear them, it's wrong that the kids were allowed to tease him. Vive le difference RE: HOW WOULD YOU HAVE HANDLED THIS? - blueberryhill - 12-14-2012 you obviously don't know anything about genetics and what is passed from parent to child. Nurture/environment plays a strong role also but you can't dismiss the genetics. RE: HOW WOULD YOU HAVE HANDLED THIS? - sally - 12-14-2012 (12-14-2012, 05:13 PM)crash Wrote: Kids are born innocent. He was born that way. RE: HOW WOULD YOU HAVE HANDLED THIS? - crash - 12-14-2012 I think you both missed my point, or I didn't convey it that well... I wasn't addressing his sexuality when I said 'innocence', I was addressing the innocent nature in which he chose the pink shoes. To him it's a normal choice, society is convincing him it's wrong. I have argued with people here before that I don't believe being gay is a choice. RE: HOW WOULD YOU HAVE HANDLED THIS? - Sphincter Cop - 12-14-2012 Personally, I think the whole situation is innocent. I don’t think it was “facebook” worthy at all, but I find humor in it as well. Kids truly are innocent in not knowing any better. But what a fabulous choice in flats!!! LOL As for the ignorance of thinking homosexuality is based on choice over genetics; pathetic. It is NOT A CHOICE or a LEARNED BEHAVIOR. No one chooses to be "gay", chooses to lose family and friends, or enjoys a certain amount of harrasment from time to time. Hate, prejudice, racism, narrow minded thinking, and fear are choices. I'm with you Crash. Totally innocent in the way he asked to wear them. My 5 year old will sometimes see his sisters stuff and ask why boys don't wear certain clothing or earrings, etc. RE: HOW WOULD YOU HAVE HANDLED THIS? - Sphincter Cop - 12-14-2012 (12-14-2012, 05:32 PM)crash Wrote: I think you both missed my point, or I didn't convey it that well... Crash, I totally agree and got what you said. It is the same in Europe; the societies there are so free and without hindrance. You will find in arabic cultures that men hold hands in solidarity. To show genuine friendship. Assholes in the U.S., think that's gay because they were taught within our culture to view it as such. RE: HOW WOULD YOU HAVE HANDLED THIS? - blueberryhill - 12-14-2012 Crash, I am so sorry about getting my panties in a wad. i do understand now. i agree with you. Years ago I did a paper in college about how our society trains children to match their gender. we make sure boys get the trucks, play guns, etc., and the girls get the dolls, the play kitchens, etc. talk about where we learn our societal roles. I could never buy my grandsons anything pink, not even at two weeks old. |
