UNWANTED GIFTS - Duchess - 12-31-2012

Do you re-gift or return OR do the people gifting you do such a great job you're always happy with your loot?

RE: UNWANTED GIFTS - username - 12-31-2012

I've re-gifted some kid's gifts but usually my family and in-laws give good stuff.

My husband got me a Michele watch this year. I'd never heard of the brand. Anyway, it's white. I like it well enough (it's sporty/fun) but can you wear a white watch after Labor Day? Smiley_emoticons_slash

If anyone comments say it's winter white.

RE: UNWANTED GIFTS - QueenBee - 12-31-2012

I have regifted a few times. A few years back, a Christmas gift I got became a really nice wedding gift that the couple actually really liked. I have returned stuff as well.

I re-gift if I don't necessarily want a gift and think someone would like it more.

Last year, my husbands ex-wife got us a white throw blanket. It was plain but really soft and king size. I was going to give it to my grandmother, along with the gift I already got her. But I forgot it at our house. So, one cold January evening I got it out. It is one of my favorite throws ever.

I regift alcohol.
I've yet to receive a complaint.

If I don't want the gift, I'm not gonna give it to someone else unless I know for certain they want to have it - I only give stuff to people I like so why baggage them with something I don't want just to get rid of it? But unless the gift is handmade and/or the person giving it to me has put a lot of thought into it, I'm not gonna say I like it just to spare their feelings.

RE: UNWANTED GIFTS - Teacher - 01-01-2013

Three gifts which immediately popped into my mind when I read the title of this thread:

School gifts -
You can imagine that a teacher gets a wide range of gifts from really nice to junk. One that I fondly recall was a "used" pair of earrings that had posts that had turned green and had gunk all over them - so nasty. The other was a very tiny bottle of perfume that had about l/4th inch left in the bottom. These two gifts really touched me since the givers were extremely poor but didn't want to forget me at Christmas. Times like that were when I had to be a really good actress and ooh and ahh over them. Later when the earring gift-giver asked me why I never wore them to school, I informed him that they were too beautiful and that I only wore them when I really dressed up for special occasions. Satisfied him completely.

Family gift -
Remember it only because I thought it was so funny. My husband's sister who is extremely well-off but so very cheap gave my husband an electric comb which when used would straighten curly hair. When my husband opened it, her 11 year-old son said, "Mom, why did you give that to Uncle ________? You know it doesn't work since you gave it to me and we tried it."

Through the years you must have accumulated a bushel of fake apples. Smiley_emoticons_wink

What is the nicest gift a student ever gave you? Have any of them ever returned as young adults to see you?

Never received a fake apple but did receive on a weekly basis some "delectable" treat that mom had made (cookies, brownies, etc.) For some strange reason I never ate them at school in front of the kids since one was not enough to share - told them I'd wait until after school. Most of these "treats" came from very poor, dirty kids. Unfortunately, they ended up in the garbage after school hours.

Well, the most expensive gift was a $75.00 gift certificate which, of course, I appreciated very much. But honestly, those that meant the most to me were the junky things they found around the house that came from those who couldn't afford a gift. It really is true that it's the thought that counts.

One of the biggest compliments I have received as a teacher is opening the door and seeing a former student. Sometimes they just want to talk about their experiences in my room, talk about their education and new jobs, show me their precious angels (their kids), etc. Every year I always called my entire class my "precious angels" whether precious or mean as a snake. They loved that and always believed that they were all my precious angels! A whole lot of them were.

Re-gifting is fine but it wust be shot from the most powerful catapult and off the highest hill in the village. I like fresh fruitcake and wonder who started that nasty hatred towards it. I cannot bring myself to bring back socks that are to small and yes I am regifting a shrinky dink thing that I forgot was in the closet.
