Back to the original post, while I do think that there are lazy asses out there milking the system for all it's worth, I have a ton of sympathy for people born in to poverty. While it's entirely possible to lift yourself out of that, I don't think you can compare being born in to a middle or upper middle class family vs. being born in to extreme poverty. If that's all you know...I think it's much harder to pull yourself up and do something entirely different than what your parents and [possibly] grandparents did.

My parents helped me financially with my education, loaned me money for my first house, and more importantly showed me a good life by example. Highly unlikely that growing up with all that, I would leave and suddenly slip in to poverty. Conversely, if you grow up with poverty....? Much harder to escape that IMO.
