I'm not convinced this has always been true.
People have probably always been afraid of change and resisted it but I can't help but suspect that before the invention of writing that more were willing to embrace it. Writing was a watershed event for the species since it allowed many more people to become educated and to contribute to the sum total of human knowledge. The human advantage isn't intelligence, it's language. Not only did writing allow more widespread contributions but it propelled innovation and population to higher levels.
The unintended by products of change might have been the cause of the fear of change after populations got sio high that starvation might be the unintended consequence but I think it more likely that the real cause was war. With greater wealth and population came greater need for security beyond mere police. Militaries were formed for defense and conquest and this is where innovators and crackpots started getting put in the front lines. Relatively few survived so the problem was solved. Napolean put the tallest soldiers in front and now the French are among the shortest people.
There are several possible components that make up a person's resistence to change. Some is just an inflexibility of thought and some people just don't want to risk their comfort no matter how little of it they have. Some is religious and this component might be a little worse among monotheists but one certainly doesn't need to be monotheist to kill oddballs.
I still believe the world has been in a dark ages for a very very long time. We took a bad turn 4,000 years ago and never looked back.

God is a delusion spread by hypocrites who prey on weakness, grief, gullibility and the ability of the human mind to create false memory. Money hungry organisations self obsessed with their own survival over humanity, any day of the week.
Fuck God I say! Let him strike me down...

Would you care to elaborate ? I don't feel bound by religion in any way. I don't go through life wondering what Jesus would do. I live my life the way I want & religion plays no role in how I conduct myself.

Every bill your Govt produces has "In God We Trust" printed on it- your Senators/Law makers perpetuate system that has its roots in Western Christian beliefs; it is so ingrained you think you don't feel it - until you go to another culture, i.e., Islam, Buddhism, etc. (and not the Western varieties of them).
cladking, I read your post with great interest, really.
I simply cannot agree with you - as hard as I have tried to see it from your point of view.
My life is a little busy right now, and I hope that we can get to this discussion again sometime
if you are so inclined. I wanted to acknowledge your time to post as I find ignorance fucking annoying.

I see a pattern in religion and economic stability. When times get bad and people are pushed to the limits, times get tough and things just turn sour, many people turn to God. When everyone is happy and they have money, jobs, security they forget God. Others have nobody to blame and just take it out on whoever comes across their path. They hate God because others find solice in him and cannot understand it. Trying as hard as possible to disprove him they turn to name calling and belittling. People are strange.

Do you know, seriously, that is the most sense in any post I have ever come across in my 30 years of Internet.

Indeed.
We are a very perverse lot.
But this gets back to the bad turn we took. I'm not sure of the nature of the turn nor the cause but the cause might be related to the story in the Bible of the Tower of Babel. I wonder if man didn't used to think a lot differently and use language differently. Suddenly we changed and it might have been cued by writing on a structure or something of the nature.
When we had Gods for everything we knew we were ignorant and dependent on those Gods for our very survival. But at least in modern times people have the concept that we know everything. Oh sure, maybe they personally don't know but there's someone somewhere who has it.
Actually we don't really know anything more about what causes gravity than the great pyramid builders knew. Shu was the God of Upward and Tefnut was the Goddess of Downward. They knew that thing Shu affected were eventually taken by Tefnut. But they weren't foolhearty enough to believe they could understand the Gods.
Sir Isaac Newton studied the pyramids because he believed the secret of gravity was encoded in it by the builders. Ironically he actually found and translated a corrolary to his third law of motion but didn't know it. The builders said everything you need to know about gravity and building pyramids right at the entrance. Well, at least there's an equation that could be potential energy equals kinetic energy.
The problem for the last 4000 years is everyone knows every damn thing. One person knows there's a God and another knows there isn't. Why wouldn't there be conflict and war when we're all working at cross purposes and are omnicient. We just don't notice that everyone has always been wrong in the past and this could apply to our sorry asses too.

Alright, listen..just saw part of a program on the History Channel. There was speculation that when Moses had his chat with God up on Mt Sinai, he may have actually had an alien encounter. So here is what I ask you....since we are made to believe that God is "not of this world", not human...would it not stand to reason he was extra terrestrial??

Chariots of the Gods?

When it is clear you don't have the attention span to watch a whole programme, much less a series, or even to study a particular subject with some gravitas, I'm thinking that any religious discussion with you is best limited to the quick quotes printed on the back of cereal boxes. I'll dig out some cubist-armchair one-liners for ya! :wallbash:

I choose not to believe in a God who requires I place unconditional trust in without first earning it, whilst hiding in a closet insisting I do so.

Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.

Dick must be addressing me since no one has posted here since the 15th of August. But since he has me on ignore he won't see this post. He is very childish...not impressed and I HATE hissy fit people. And I'll use emotes JUST to annoy his ass.
He'll see the post now. And, hate to agree with Dick at all, but really tiny text is fucking annoying.
