As a subscriber to Q-Notes, I’m disappointed in their “editorial decision” to endorse Edwards. Ironically, he’s one of the only Democratic candidates that uses religion to authenticate his LGBT bigotry.

Each time he takes the pulpit to discuss LGBT issues, Edwards always uses his “Baptist background” to justify his policy positions – such as only supporting civil unions not fully recognized civil marriage. From the other end of his mouth, he quietly utters the statement that he believes it is wrong for the President to use his/her religious views to influence policy.

It’s an all together warped message. The reality is this: any interpetation of Christianity that says Scripture is condescending of LGBT people simply for same-gender love is wrong. It’s a flawed interpetation.

As John Edwards, like John Paul, continues to throw out his nets to capture as many voters as possible, he continues down a path of broken promises and bigotry disguised behind religious excuses.

I’ve decided to vote for Hillary Clinton because I believe the Senator’s experience and compassion will take America in the direction that I believe we need to go. Her record with LGBT people (not her husbands) is bright and promising. She was the first First Lady to have openly gay & lesbians on her staff. She has been an advocate and friend of our community in both word and deed. She has showed LGBT people that she cares enough to listen to us and to act responsibly to protect our rights. While she’s not perfect, I believe her record speaks for itself and as our country continues to shift in a new direction, I believe Hillary will take the lead to do the same.

I’m sorry, I just can’t support someone that says being raised a Baptist made him feel wierd around gays – especially someone who claims to be a fair & balanced leader.

PRESS STATEMENT

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
November 3, 2010

HICKORY, NC – Spiritual Counseling Network Healing & Deliverance Center makes the following statement to the media:

On October 18, 2010 we started the Zahra Baker Fund to assist in locating and supporting efforts to locate Zahra Baker, a 10-year old Australian-native who went missing in our hometown of Hickory, NC. From the beginning, our efforts were totally sincere and genuine.

The media circus that has resulted primarily the result of false accusations and lies, and a number of threats of violence we have received, has caused us to rethink our efforts to assist in this endeavor. After careful consideration, the Board of Elders has decided to suspend our efforts. Effectively immediately, Spiritual Counseling Network will no longer accept donations or make solicitation for Zahra Baker Fund.

To date, we have raised $712.29. At this time, we are prayerfully awaiting the discovery of Zahra’s body. Once it is found, we will offer support to cover expenses related to her funeral/memorial or to aid in the transportation of her body back to Australia – as is decided by her family (which lives in Australia). We may also assist with transportation costs associated with her family coming from Australia to the United States to claim Zahra’s body. If no assistance is needed, we will disperse the balance of the account to a non-profit organization that educates the public against child abuse, neglect and/or exploitation - likely one who has assisted in Zahra’s disappearance.

We encourage the public that would still like to support ongoing efforts to locate Zahra, to make financial gifts to the Center for Missing and Exploited Children. Individuals interested in giving financially for a reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible, are encouraged to give to a local Crime Stoppers organization who are already offering rewards in this case.

Following legal advice we have received, no further comment will be available at this time surrounding any potential legal actions that we may be considering against individual(s) or any actions against individuals who have disseminated threats of violence against the ministry and our staff.

The Spiritual Counseling Network created the Zahra Baker Fund. Many people questioned the legitimacy of it and on Wednesday, it issued a statement saying it is suspending its fundraising efforts.

The Spiritual Counseling Network’s statement blamed the media for the “false accusations and lies,” as well as for the resulting threats it has received from members of the community. It said its “efforts were totally sincere and genuine.”
