The authorities in Nepal have ordered officials to find more goats for ritual slaughter ahead of the country's biggest religious festival of the year.

Officials say that there is a severe shortage of goats to offer as sacrifice in the capital Kathmandu.

The reason for the shortage is unclear, but experts say it is mostly due to demand outstripping supply.

They say that it may be because China has this year exported fewer goats to Nepal, resulting in far higher prices.

The Nepal Food Corporation has now ordered officials to travel to the countryside and buy goats to be brought to Kathmandu ahead of the festival of Dashain on 19 September.

Goats are traditionally slaughtered during the 15-day event to appease Durga, an important Hindu goddess.

A radio campaign has been launched to persuade farmers to sell their animals as part of a campaign to meet the high demand for goat meat and to control price rises.


TASMANIA is in the grip of a goat shortage with prospective owners facing waits of more than a year to secure a kid.

President of the Dairy Goat Association of Tasmania, Jane Hewlett, said the demand was largely being created by people moving to lifestyle properties and seeking goats as working pets.

"A lot of people now want to make cheese and yoghurt from their own goat's milk and there is also a lot of demand from people with children who suffer from dermatitis, eczema or psoriasis."

Ms Hewlett said goats breed only once a year and this year's breeding season had just been completed.

"Most of the kids were prior booked and many went to the mainland," she said.

"Tasmania is also involved in export trade to Taiwan and the Philippines - countries particularly keen on Anglo Nubians because of their versatility as both a dairy and meat goat."

Moriarty Anglo Nubian breeder, Anna Shepheard, said this year she had only one kid to sell.

"I could easily have sold 20 from the inquiries I received but I did have not the kids available.

"Because of global warming and the desire to live more sustainably goats have become very popular.

"One goat will provide enough milk each day to meet a family's needs without the emissions created by a cow."
