Calgary Herald

A Calgary child killer on day parole in Regina has been given a cellphone by volunteers so he can reach out to them for support.

Life in a halfway house isn’t easy for Harold David Smeltzer, who is serving a life sentence for murdering his five-year-old Calgary neighbour, Kimberley Thompson, in 1980.

Publicity about his past has led to anxiety and frustration because no one will hire him, according to the National Parole Board.

The 55-year-old has yet to find employment since being released to a halfway house in December 2008 after serving 28 years in custody in Saskatchewan.

He earns an allowance for custodial work at the local community correctional centre.

Smeltzer has earned another six months of freedom in a halfway house, the National Parole Board ruled June 6.

There have been no incidents with Smeltzer, who has strict conditions to stay away from children and have near daily contact with police.

Smeltzer has been given a cellphone by volunteers who work with high-risk, high-needs sex offenders released at warrant expiry into communities across Canada.

His contacts from Circle of Support and Accountability want him to be able to immediately contact them if he has “immediate concerns” to discuss, according to the parole board.

He is allowed to leave his halfway house unescorted, provided he stays away from children. Smeltzer is not allowed near parks, swimming pools, schools and other gathering places.

He must return to the halfway house nightly.

Smeltzer is a pedophile with an anti-social personality disorder, according to the board.

In January 1980, Smeltzer abducted five-year-old Kimberley Thompson as she was walking to kindergarten on an Altadore street in Calgary.

He said he intended to sexually assault her, but she recognized him, so he drowned her and stuffed her body into a garbage can.

Five months later, he was arrested for the murder after an 11-year-old girl he’d recently raped spotted him walking on Elbow Drive.

Smeltzer has admitted attacking nearly 40 girls and women during a five-year reign of terror in the Altadore and South Calgary area.

He was convicted of first-degree murder, two rapes and two attempted rapes.

A Southern California woman was in custody Tuesday after authorities said she drugged her estranged husband, tied him to a bed, cut off his penis and put it through a garbage disposal. Oops

Garden Grove police Lt. Jeff Nightengale said that Catherine Kieu Becker drugged a meal and served it to the victim, whose name was not released, shortly before the attack Monday night.

Nightengale said the 51-year-old man felt sick, went to lie down and lost consciousness. He said the 48-year-old Becker then tied the victim's arms and legs to the bed with rope, removed his clothes and attacked him with a 10-inch kitchen knife as he awoke.

"He was conscious when his penis was removed," Nightengale said.

Nightengale said Becker put the penis in the garbage disposal and turned it on.

Nightengale said Becker called 911 and acknowledged committing the crime to arriving officers. Paramedics found the victim tied to the bed, bleeding profusely.

Bail for Becker was set at $1 million after she was booked at the Orange County Jail for investigation of aggravated mayhem, false imprisonment, assault with a deadly weapon, administering a drug with intent to commit a felony, poisoning and spousal abuse.

The victim underwent surgery and was in serious condition at the University of California at Irvine Medical Center in Orange. Nightengale said the man is expected to survive.

KENNER, La. -- Police are investigating a quadruple shooting that left four people dead, including three children, Tuesday in Kenner, according to the Kenner Police Department.

The shooting happened in the 3800 block of East Louisiana State Drive around 5 p.m.

The victims in the shooting were identified as: Nadia Braxton, 29; Kayla Peters, 12; a 1-year-old child, Nayah Peters and a 6-month-old, Nyla Peters.

Kenner Police Chief Steve Caraway said the bodies were found by the husband. He told police that he had been at work since 6 a.m., and when he got home, he called out for his children but didn't hear anything.

"When he didn't hear anything, he eventually walked upstairs and found them, all of the kids, lying in the bed," Caraway said. Caraway added that the body of the wife was found in the same bed.

The mother, 29, suffered a gunshot wound to her forehead, Caraway said. The 1-year-old and the 6-month-old also both suffered gunshot wounds to the forehead. The coroner is on the scene and is trying to determine where the 12-year-old was shot.

Caraway said police haven't found any evidence tying the shooting to the father, but he said it's "far too early to assume anything." He said police found a weapon in the room where the bodies were found.

"It's still very early in the investigation. We're interviewing the father and other family members at this time," Caraway said.

No charges have been filed in this case.

If you know anything about this shooting that can help investigators, call Crimestoppers at 822-1111.

he can't be sentenced to death, but he will be tried as an adult and get LWOP. to have a party?? this has to be drugs.

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- Police say a teen "brutally and mercilessly" hacked his parents to death with a hammer and then threw a house party via Facebook invites while their bodies remained in a locked bedroom.

Tyler Hadley was arrested and charged with counts of first-degree murder and is being held without bond. Police say he will be charged as an adult.

Port St. Lucie police spokesman Tom Nichols said police were dispatched to 371 NE Grandeur Ave. at 4:20 a.m. Sunday on a tip that the 17-year-old had murdered his parents and the bodies remained inside the house.

Police arrived and were greeted by a "nervous and panicky" Tyler Hadley, 17, and evidence of a house party, said police Capt. Don Kryak. Hadley reportedly told police that his parents were out of town. After Hadley was transported to police headquarters for questioning and a search warrant obtained, police found behind the locked master-bedroom door the bodies of Blake, 54, and Mary-Jo Hadley, 47, Tyler's parents. The bodies were partially buried under household items with a hammer between them.

Police believe the hammer was the murder weapon. The parents' bodies had trauma wounds to the head and torso.

"It was a merciless killing," Kryak said, describing the injuries as "brutal."

Police believe the mother was killed first, then the father and the bodies were dragged into the master bedroom. Kryak said the bodies were only partially hidden under linens, books, picture frames and towels.

Police say the party was held Saturday night beginning about 9 p.m. and 40 to 60 people attended. An invite was posted to Hadley's friends on Facebook about 1 p.m. Saturday. It's not clear how the anonymous tipster came to suspect the bodies of Hadley's parents were in the home.

Blake Hadley has been identified as an FPL employee at the St. Lucie Nuclear Power Plant. Mary-Jo Hadley was an elementary school teacher in the St. Lucie County school system with 24 years of experience. She had worked the last six years at at Village Green Environmental Studies School, the school district reported.

Police say Tyler Hadley dropped out of classes at St. Lucie West Centennial High School and had apparently attempted diploma completion programs at two other schools.

Court documents show the Hadleys were being sued in St. Lucie County for $15,000 after Tyler Hadley allegedly struck and injured a child pedestrian in June 2010 while driving a car registered to his father. The suit was filed in May.

An autopsy on the parents' bodies is scheduled.

Police are asking anyone who attended the party to contact them as part of the investigation. Their phone number is (772) 871-5000.

A veteran police detective and her 18-year-old daughter were stabbed to death and her son arrested on suspicion of murder after he was found sitting next to the teenager's nude body on the sidewalk outside their home.

The bodies of Donna Williams, 52, and Briana Williams, from San Diego, were discovered by officers who went to the Rancho Penasquitos neighborhood shortly before 1:30am on Monday.

Neighbors had called 911 to report a violent disturbance and a woman screaming for help at a home, police said.

Officers found the teenager's nude body on the sidewalk and her mother in an upstairs bedroom of the two-story home.

Mrs Williams' son was sitting next to his sister's body and a large kitchen knife was found on the front lawn, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported.
Briana Williams apparently jumped, fell or was pushed from the balcony, authorities said.

She was still alive when they arrived but died moments later despite attempts to resuscitate her.

He said it appeared the mother had been awake at the time of the attack as her TV was on and she was dressed.

He said officers had been called to the house on June 30 because of another disturbance but said the matter had been resolved. He did not provide details.

Donna Williams, a mother-of-five, was a 31-year veteran of the San Diego Police Department who mainly worked in the child abuse unit after joining the department in 1980 as a patrol woman.

she was working about seven to ten cases at any given time as a child abuse detective, paying especially close attention to details that could make or break a case, according to police.

Captain Collins said: 'She was known as the cornerstone of the unit.'

According to the San Diego Union-Tribune, in 2004 she was honoured for her dedication to the job and was expected to retire from the department in three years, Collins said.

Her husband, Howard Williams, was a former homicide detective with the department who died in 2007.

Collins would not release any information about the son - who was said to be 'immersed in God and church - except to say that it did not appear that drugs or alcohol were involved.

Shelby Star N.C.
Police say the circumstances surrounding a 2-year-old girl's death at a Bessemer City motel remain suspicious, but no one had been charged as of late Friday with the child's killing. The girl’s mother had left her in the hotel with a babysitter who is a registered sex offender.

The mother, 32-year-old Shanna Lanham of Bessemer City, says she was at work at a local café on Thursday night when the incident occurred. Jason Michael Wells, 33, of Bessemer City was babysitting little Addison Grace Lanham at their motel room, she said.

Authorities received a 911 call at 6:14 p.m. Thursday about an unresponsive girl at America’s Best Inn, 1207 Edgewood Road, Bessemer City.

Addison was transported to Gaston Memorial Hospital where she later died.

Shanna says she knew Wells was a registered sexual offender but thought he had changed his ways. She’s known him for about 18 years; they went to school together and he “used to be wild,” she said.

A witness Friday morning said he saw police carry the toddler out of the hotel. He said the child appeared to have been badly beaten, her eyes swollen shut. She was taken away in an ambulance.

“We’re still trying to find out how the child died and why (she) may have died,” said Gaston County Assistant Police Chief J.D. Ramey. “The circumstances around the child’s death are suspicious.”

Police arrested Wells early Friday morning and charged him with failure to report a change of address by a sex offender and babysitting a child as a sex offender. As of press time Friday, he had not been charged with a crime.

Shanna Lanham said Wells called her at work Thursday night and she went straight to the motel.

“All he said was ‘It’s Addison. Hurry up and get there’ and I just dropped the phone and took off,” she said.

Lanham said she and Wells reunited about a year ago and reignited their old friendship. They’ve been fucking on-and-off since then, she said.

“He had supposedly changed his life. I mean, he just used to be wild. It seemed that he had calmed down,” she said, adding that Wells had moved in with her and Addison at the motel a little over a month ago.

Registered sex offender

Wells had his first appearance in court on Friday afternoon before Judge Richard Abernethy via closed-circuit television. Assistant District Attorney Travis Page recommended Abernethy increase Wells’ bond from $500,000 to $1 million.

“I would ask that the bond be modified,” Page said. “The allegations are that he was babysitting a 2-year-old child and that child is now dead.”

Page said in court that no further charges are pending for Wells “at the moment” and the case is under police investigation.

Abernethy raised Wells’ bond to $750,000 and warned him that if bond is posted, he is not to have contact with the toddler’s family.

Wells appeared emotionless on the TV screen as Abernethy spoke with him.

“I’m not going anywhere right now,” Wells said, adding that he is unemployed.

According to the North Carolina Department of Justice, Wells was convicted of sexual battery in Gaston County on Dec. 17, 2010.

On Jan. 29, 2010, he was charged with taking indecent liberties with a child, according to arrest records.

Lanham said she didn’t know Wells’ entire criminal background but she had accompanied him to court in 2010 when he faced charges of taking indecent liberties with a child.

“I believed him through the whole thing basically. I actually went to court with him,” she said, adding that she believes the young girl making the accusation against Wells had lied. “I just didn’t see him as that kind of person.”

Lanham said she loved Wells and that he and Addison got along well.

“He was good with her, you know? He seemed to love her,” she said. “He was good with her, you know?”

Friends in shock

On Friday morning at America’s Best Inn, employees and customers were in shock. They’d lost their friend, Addison, and wanted answers concerning her death. Some felt betrayed because they didn’t know Wells was a registered sexual offender.

Court documents list Wells’ address as that of America’s Best Inn.

With the two new charges against him, Wells was booked into the Gaston County Jail at 2:33 a.m. Friday.

Gaston County Police Capt. J.W. Human said at this point in the investigation he can’t say if further charges will be filed against Wells or if Lanham will be charged with anything. Lanham was being interviewed by detectives from 2 p.m. until about 4:30 p.m. Friday.

“This case is ongoing. Right now, we’re waiting on the medical examiner’s report,” Human said. “It’s kind of in limbo as far as any potential charges for him or her.”

Human said an autopsy is being performed on Addison’s body and it could take one to six weeks to receive the results.
A ‘very loving’ toddler

Phyllis Hammonds, who described herself as the desk clerk at America’s Best Inn, said she checked Shanna and Addison into their room about three months ago.

“She had just fallen on hard times. She told me the last time I talked with her, that was her goal – to get a home for her and Addison,” Hammonds said. “She thought she had found prince charming who was going to take care of her and Addison.”

Lanham appeared tearful as she told reporters Friday morning that Addison “was a great kid” and “so smart.”

“She was a happy baby, she was so happy,” said Lanham. “She would hug me and she would pat my back and she would rub my face and say ‘mama I love you.’ I just want her back, I just want her back.”

Hammonds appeared upset, hurt and sad as she talked about Addison, who would come up to the inn’s office with Shanna to get ice.

“She’s a baby, who does that to a baby? She was beautiful. She was quiet but she was very loving,” Hammonds said. “I’m mad. She was an angel, she did not deserve that. I was in shock, I was like no way.”

Lanham says right now she doesn’t know how her daughter died.

“I honestly don’t know what to think, to be honest with you,” she said. “I’m putting it in the hands of the police but more than that, I’m putting it in the hands of the Lord.” or a lynch mob!

A mother and her boyfriend face involuntary manslaughter charges in connection with the death of a 2-year-old girl last week, Gaston County police say.

Addison Lanham died late Thursday at Gaston Memorial Hospital, and police say an autopsy shows the toddler succumbed to sepsis, an infection of the blood. Police say the little girl also had a broken leg and had not received medical care.

Shanna Lanham, 32, and Jason Wells, 33, were charged Tuesday night with involuntary manslaughter and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Wells already was in jail on charges of failing to register as a convicted sex offender.

On Wednesday, additional charges of felony child abuse were filed against Lanham and Wells. During a bond hearing, the judge indicated indictments would be sent to the Grand Jury on Monday.

Assistant Gaston District Attorney Stephnanie Hamlin said "our office plans to prosecute this case to the fullest extent possible."

The estranged daughter of actor Billy Bob Thornton has been found guilty in Florida of aggravated manslaughter of a child.
ORLANDO, Fla. - The Orange County State Attorney's Office says the verdict against 32-year-old Amanda Brumfield was returned Friday. She faced murder charges in the 2008 death of her best friend's 1-year-old daughter, Olivia Madison Garcia.

She was found not guilty on first-degree murder and aggravated child abuse charges.

Brumfield claimed the girl hit her head after falling while trying to climb out of a playpen. Prosecutors said it was "impossible" that a fall from that height would cause a three-and-a-half inch fracture on the girl's skull.

The trial took place in the same courthouse where Casey Anthony is on trial for the death of her 2-year-old daughter, Caylee.

BUT NOT THE SAME STUPID JURY.

FILTH TAKES THEIR BABY ON AN ARMED ROBBERY. and leaves him behind.

PHILADELPHIA — A North Philadelphia couple charged with stealing more than $70,000 in rings from a Philadelphia jewelry store — abandoning their 4-year-old son after the man slashed the jeweler’s throat — were found guilty on all charges Tuesday by a jury.

The reading of the Common Pleas Court jury’s verdict was punctuated by a loud shriek from a niece of defendant John Benson.

Though deputies quickly removed Dawn Benson-Saunders from the courtroom, her hysterical screams could be heard echoing through the closed door.

Benson, 48, and Sheakia Stubbs, 32, were charged in the Feb. 27, 2010, theft at the Platinum & Ice jewelry store.

Benson, however, was found guilty of the more serious charges of attempted murder and aggravated assault for slashing jeweler Yaniv Cohen after Cohen chased him down the street, cornered him and demanded the rings’ return.

Benson was also found guilty of robbery, conspiracy, retail theft and child endangerment.

Stubbs, who was with Benson in the store and is the mother of their 4-year-old son, Simir, was found guilty of conspiracy, retail theft and child endangerment.

Judge Charles J. Cunningham III set sentencing for both to take place on Sept. 21.

Assistant District Attorney Thomas Lipscomb said Benson faces a mandatory minimum prison term of 10 to 20 years but added that he would seek a longer term.

For Stubbs, however, the conviction was almost academic: She had already served 17 months since arrest — three months longer than the outside of the sentencing guideline range.

Cunningham released her without requiring the posting of bail but ordered her to return Sept. 21 for sentencing.

Afterward, Benson-Saunders, 38, said she could not understand how the jury found her uncle guilty of attempted murder.

"And why does she get to go free?" Benson-Saunders added, referring to Stubbs. "She left the boy behind, too."

Witnesses identified Benson, Stubbs and their son as the trio who entered the jewelry store about 3 p.m. and asked to look at rings.

Stubbs took Simir and moved to the door, asking to leave. Benson, witnesses said, distracted a salesman, scooped up some rings, and ran from the store with Simir in tow. Stubbs fled in a different direction.

After being chased and confronted by Cohen, Benson slashed the jeweler’s throat with a razor and ran, leaving his son behind.

Benson’s attorney, Bruce Wolf, urged the jury to focus on evidence that was not present: no fingerprints and no one in the store who actually saw Benson grab the rings. EXCEPT THE POOR BASTARD WHOSE THROAT WAS SLASHED!

Stubbs was charged because she held ajar the remote-control door so Benson could escape. The store’s door had to be buzzed open by the owner for customers to enter or leave.

Cohen was treated and released for the wound, though he still has a five-inch scar. None of the jewelry was recovered.

After Benson bolted, Cohen took Simir to a police station. Simir was in foster care for seven months before he was released to Stubbs’ brother.

Stubbs’ attorney, Kristin Quinn, said she did not know if Stubbs would immediately be permitted to see her son.

The Philadelphia Inquirer.

(CNN) -- Authorities are expected to offer more details during a noon news conference Monday about a shooting spree in northeastern Ohio in which a man gunned down seven people before police killed him.

The shootings occurred shortly before 11 a.m. Sunday in Copley Township, about seven miles west of Akron, according to the Copley Police Department.

According to police, the shootings began at one house where the gunman shot his girlfriend, continued when the shooter ran to an adjacent house where he shot five people, then went on as he chased two others "through some backyards" before hitting one.

"The shooter then went to another home ... where two other persons he had chased sought refuge. He entered the home, shot one victim and exited the home," a police statement said.

At that point, a Copley police officer and a former officer who was in the area encountered the shooter who "engaged the officer and the citizen in gunfire and (the shooter) was shot and killed."

The suspect shot eight people, killing seven and wounding one, police said. That victim was hospitalized, but the person's condition was not known early Monday morning.

A woman who lives near the scene of the shootings described how one of the gunman's would-be victims fled.

"Somebody knocked on my door and a woman was at my porch, hiding on my porch," Brenda McCrady told CNN affiliate WJW-TV.

When McCrady opened the door, the woman ran inside and told her, "somebody had shot her husband point blank in the head. ... And then she started screaming, 'My son, my son, my 11-year-old son.'"

Authorities said one victim was 11.

The identities of the victims are being withheld pending notification of kin, the Summit County medical examiner's office said.

Residents held a candlelight vigil Sunday evening, according to WJW. One neighbor said several victims were from two families who had lived side by side for years.

Another neighbor said residents were shocked and baffled by the shooting and would likely never get a full explanation.

"The killer's gone. We'll never know," the neighbor said.

Warren Jeffs was sentenced to life in prison on Tuesday after a jury deliberated for only 30 minutes.

The polygamist sect leader was convicted last week on two counts of sexually assaulting a 12-year-old and a 15-year-old who were his "spiritual wives." The jury sentenced him to life in prison for the first count of aggravated sexual assault and 20 years for the second count of sexual assault plus a $10,000 fine. The sentences were the maximum allowed for each count. The judge ruled that the sentences be served consecutively.

San Angelo, Texas (CNN) -- Polygamist leader Warren Jeffs was sentenced Tuesday to life in prison plus 20 years for sexually assaulting two girls he claimed were his "spiritual wives."

Jeffs, 55, will have to spend at least 45 years in prison before being eligible for release, according to Jerry Strickland, spokesman for the Texas Attorney General's office.

The jury sentenced Jeffs to life in prison for aggravated sexual assault of a 12-year-old girl and 20 years in prison for the sexual assault of a 15-year-old girl. He must serve at least 35 years of the life sentence and half of the other sentence, Strickland said. The judge in the case ordered that the sentences be served consecutively.

Jeffs perverted his position as the head of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to "satisfy his own personal appetites and desires," prosecutor Eric Nichols said.

Those appetites included forcing sex on the two girls, 12 and 15, who he had taken as wives, prosecutors said.

Audiotapes seized from his car and the church's Yearning For Zion Ranch compound in Eldorado, Texas, and played for jurors during his trial, depicted Jeffs offering "celestial marriage" instructions to the young wives, according to prosecutors.

"You have to know how to be sexually excited and to help each other ... and you have to be ready for the time I need your comfort," a man's voice says. "This is your mission. This is how you abide the law.

At one point, the man says, "Take your clothes off. Do it right now," followed by the sounds of crying.

"Just don't think about the pain; you're going to heaven," the man says.
