Bradley Manning
#1
Bradley Mannings court martial starts today, he's the soldier who allegedly sent 250,000 diplomatic cables and 500,000 battlefield reports from Afghanistan and Iraq to wikileaks in 2009 and 2010.

If convicted on all counts he could be jailed for life without any chance of parole.

What do you think? blabbermouth traitor who should be locked up and have the key thrown away?

Or

Brave whistleblower who exposed the dark side of US foreign policy?

There might be another thread about this somewhere I couldn't be arsed to look.

Traitor, no doubt about it. He took an oath, swore to his nation to protect and then he SOLD info to an outside entity.
It was in no way his decision to expose anything, nor did he in any way have any responsibility to do so.
With some luck, no one died due to his actions, but no telling what he damaged.
A case could be made for the death penalty since we are technically at war. He is a pice of shit, hang him.

Traitor.

There is a mechanism in place if he wanted to be a whistle-blower. Instead he was a douche.

Hang him high.

Did you see the movie? It was amazing the stuff he did leak. They shot and killed these innocent people in Iraq in cold blood. No one wants to be outed as a murderer.

I agree that he's a traitor.

I feel like he thought he was a super smart guy that was bringing so-called indiscretions to light. He thought he get a big pat on the back.

Unfortunately for his stupid ass, he was in the military. He sold out his comrades essentially, and in less PC times (say during WWII) he would've hanged.

They'll convict him and give him a life term. I think he'll end up serving between 15-25 of that.

His life, however, is fucked.

What about the murderers he exposed? They may get off on Earth but not before God. Murder is murder, it does not matter if you are wearing a uniform or flying a plane.

The most controversial stuff he leaked was video footage with audio of US helicopter gunships chomping at the bit to open fire on Iraqi civilians who were clearly unarmed. The personnel involved are virtually begging and pleading for permission to open fire. They are eventually given permission and they blaze away at unarmed civilians (including children) while saying things like “nice!” And “fucking A!”

Having said that he should have kept his big mouth shut, I used to work for Northumbria police and I am now a social worker and in both cases I signed the official secrets act. That means no matter what I see no matter what I hear I keep my mouth shut because it is my duty to do so.

Manning should have done the same.

I don't really know anything about this person or what he has done but just so I'm clear - it would have been patriotic to keep hidden what the above comment describes? Do I understand that correctly?

That's not a good enough reason to keep something like that hidden.

...and just so I'm crystal clear, if that's a true accounting of what those soldiers did, it's nothing less than murder, murder that some of you apparently sanction. Such good Americans. Smiley_emoticons_smile

I'm sure Hitler, Gaddaffi, Mugabi, Hussein, Bin Laden and Amins' foot soldiears all swore an oath of secrecy too. Pretty sure the collective world didn't think they were really good guys. Funny how it all kinda comes down to which team you're on in the end for a lot of folks, huh?

Paranoia, Paranoia, everybody's coming to get me...

I'm never surprised anymore about what Americans will defend under the guise of being a patriotic American.

To be fair, I don't think it's just Americans. There is a fine line of common sense between patriotism and jingoism for a lot of nations.

Apparently in order to be a good citizen anywhere one is expected to support & defend their country no matter what they do. Oh dear, the term that comes to mind is sheep.
