A D.C. police officer is among the people shot at the Washington Navy Yard on Monday morning.

A police spokesman confirmed at 9:20 a.m. that the officer was shot near the room where a lone gunman has barricaded himself after allegedly shooting at least three people on the Navy Yard grounds in Southeast Washington.

The U.S. Navy said that three shots were fired around 8:20 a.m. at the Naval Sea Systems Command Headquarters building, where about 3,000 people work.

Police said that at least three, possibly four, people were shot. All are in critical condition, authorities said.

A “shelter in place” order has been issued for Navy Yard personnel, authorities said.

Police closed the 11^th St Bridge as well as M St SE between 2^nd and 4^th streets SE due to the shooting. Entrances to the Navy Yard Metro station remain open.

U.S. Capitol Police confirmed enhanced security at the Capitol, but no immediate threat.

Tyler Elementary School at 10^th and G streets in Southeast is on lockdown.

As helicopters circled overhead and emergency vehicles continued to rush to the scene, crowds of onlookers gathered on sidewalks and at a construction site near the Navy Yard, but police pushed them back, yelling at them to keep a distance from the grounds.

One employee who declined to give his name said he heard “blam, blam” inside one of the buildings, then someone pulled the fire alarm.

“We aren’t going back on base today,” he said. “[But] there are still people inside.”

Reports began circulating around 9:30 a.m. that the suspect was “down,” but D.C. police said the suspect is still on the loose and “hiding between floors.”

Two witnesses told CNN affiliate WJLA that they heard a fire alarm go off in the building where they worked, then saw a man with a rifle down the hallway as they exited the building.

"He aimed the gun and fired our way," a man who identified himself as Todd Brundidge told WJLA, adding, "I couldn't believe it."

People frantically tried to run out of the building, Brundidge said.

The ATF has sent a troop of 20 special agents to the site (same team used to apprehend the Boston bombing suspects).

Shooter dead; multiple fatalities reported (from above CNN link).

Conflicting reports emerged about whether there was another shooter. Ed Zeigler, director of public affairs for Naval District Washington, told CNN earlier Monday that two suspected shooters were "down," but the senior Navy official could not confirm whether there was more than one gunman.

Multiple people were killed in the deadly shooting, Zeigler said, which sent police in SWAT team gear swarming to the scene.

Twelve people, including one gunman, were killed, and the police were looking for other potential suspects, in a shooting Monday morning at a naval office building not far from Capitol Hill and the White House, police officials said.

One police officer was in surgery after being shot in an exchange of fire with a gunman,, said Chief Cathy L. Lanier of the Metropolitan Police Department. The shootings took place at the Washington Navy Yard, in the southeast part of the city.

Senior law enforcement officials identified the gunman as Aaron Alexis, 34. A senior law enforcement official said the authorities had identified him through his fingerprints.

Three weapons were found on the gunman: an AR-15 assault rifle, a shotgun and a semiautomatic pistol, the official said.

“It’s hard to carry that many guns, so there is some thinking that he may have taken some of them from security or whoever else he shot,” the official said.

As the day wore on, officials released conflicting information about the search for two possible gunmen.

Officials said one of the two gunmen they were looking for was a white man wearing a khaki Navy uniform and carrying a handgun. The other was a black man, about 50 years old, who was believed to be carrying a “long gun,” police officials said.

But officials in Washington did not move to lock down the city in light of that threat. The Metro, the city’s subway system, continued to operate normally. Out of an “abundance of caution,” Terrance W. Gainer, the Senate sergeant at arms, put the Senate complex into lockdown at just after 3 p.m. The Senate had recessed in the early afternoon.

Meanwhile, the city’s deputy mayor for public safety wrote on Twitter just moments after Chief Lanier’s afternoon briefing that one of the men being sought had been cleared. “The white male being sought in connection to the #NavyYardShooting has been identified and is NOT a suspect,” said the post from the account of Paul A. Quander Jr., the deputy mayor.

Police officials said that at least two police officers were shot, and that three people were in critical condition.

One victim, described as a man in his 60s, was shot in the left temple and was pronounced dead within a minute of arriving at George Washington University Hospital. “This injury was not survivable by any stretch,” a hospital official told reporters. “The patient was dead on the way to the hospital.”

The shooting started at 8:20 a.m. at the Washington Navy Yard, in the southeast part of the city, the Navy said on Twitter. Workers were told to shelter in place, and emergency personnel were on the scene.

Hundreds of police officers and naval officers surrounded the Naval Sea Systems Command headquarters, where about 3,000 service members, civilians and contractors work on the Navy’s fleet. Security at the Capitol was enhanced, and the local news media reported that several schools were put on lockdown. Security around the Pentagon was visibly increased after the shooting.

Investigators were trying to determine whether any of the suspected gunmen had official access to the Navy Yard. The site is protected by a high wall, with entry through checkpoints that require official identification. However, under the “force protection status” that was believed to have been in effect early Monday, someone with official access to the site could have driven a car into the parking lot without having the trunk inspected, or could have entered on foot without a bag being searched.

Officials at MedStar Washington Hospital Center said three individuals with gunshot wounds, including one police officer, had arrived at the trauma center and were being treated.

Janis Orlowski, the chief medical officer at the hospital, said the three victims were in critical condition but were “alert” and “responsive,” even as doctors prepared for surgery.

“They do have severe injuries, but we’ve been able to speak to all of them,” Ms. Orlowski said. “We understand there are individuals who will not be transported because they are deceased.”

But she added that the authorities at the Navy Yard had told the hospital to expect more victims.

Of the three who had already arrived, she said, one had multiple gunshot wounds to the legs. Another was shot in the shoulder. The third had a gunshot wound to the head, she said.

President Obama said that “whoever carried out this cowardly act” would be held responsible, and he praised as “patriots” the victims of the shooting.

LE cleared one of the potential suspects that they were seeking earlier; there is now potentially only one gunman on the loose - the middle aged black man in a drab olive green colored uniform.

This guy had a less than honorable discharge. He has been arrested twice in the past for shooting his gun due to his inability to controll his anger. Once he shot out another man's tires and another he shot thru his ceiling into the apartment of his neighbor who complained about too much noise. Some how he still had possession of 3 guns at the time of this attack and it makes me wonder if anything had been done to limit his access to these or any other guns.

I've said this before & I know many people don't agree but all you can do is arm yourself so you can protect yourself, your family and whoever else is around when someone goes off. You cannot count on guns being kept out of the hands of nutjobs and you shouldn't be depending on others to protect you anyway. You can only depend on yourself. If you think you're safe at work, school or play you are delusional. I'm not a paranoid person, I am a realist.

Even if you are armed, the chances of you 'outdrawing' someone who's intent on shooting you, are pretty slim.

For example, one of yesterday's initial victims was a security guard. I'm guessing he was armed, but had no chance as the perp pulled his gun first.

So, as I stated after Sandy Hook, it really comes down to hopefully being lucky enough to never be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Unless someone wants to live as a shut in, which most of us wouldn't want to do.
