Teen's controversial punishment sparks petition, lawsuit..

It’s tough for Eleanor Cox to talk about how heartbroken her daughter Erin is over the punishment she received for doing what she thought was right. “She’s very fragile and I’m worried about her. Very worried about her. She didn’t do anything wrong,” Cox told Boston's local station WBZ-TV on Sunday. Two weeks ago, Erin received a call from a friend at a party who was too drunk to drive. Erin drove to a neighboring town after work to pick up her friend. Moments after she arrived, the cops arrived too and busted several kids for underage possession of alcohol. A high school honor student, Erin was cleared by police, who agreed she had not been drinking and was not in possession of alcohol. But her high school told Erin she was in violation of the district’s zero tolerance policy against alcohol and drug use. In the middle of her senior year, Erin was demoted from captain of the volleyball team and told she would be suspended from playing for five games. “If a kid asks for help from a friend, you don’t want that kid to say ‘I’m sorry I can’t help you. I might end up in trouble at school,’” said attorney Wendy Murphy, who is trying to help the Cox family get the school’s decision reversed. The Cox family filed a lawsuit in District Court on Friday but a lawyer for the school district argued against any kind of injunction. The judge ruled the court did not have jurisdiction. Meanwhile, the parents of Erin’s teammates have started a petition to support her. Neither the school district nor its attorney could be reached for comment Sunday, but the Cox family is hoping they’ll listen to the host of supporters who’ve stood behind Erin. “She didn’t do anything wrong. She did what she thought was right, and I’m very proud of her,” Erin’s mother said..

She should feel confident that what she did was right, no matter the outcome. In this world being right may not get you far but the reputation and self confidence that comes from it is immeasurable, doing the right thing is always the right thing.
Keep us informed of the results of this please "lil queen".

I believe the principal of any school with any zero tolerance policy should be fired automatically.
These are excuses for not thinking. These are exuses for doing stupid things.

I don't believe schools should have jurisdiction outside of the school. I would never support something like that & I'd question why any parent would.

Her story was on GMA this morning. I really hope they reverse their decision to punish her for helping her friend.

While I understand, sort of, the reasoning behind the whole zero tolerance thing, I really do not agree with how anal schools are about the letter of the policy. For gods sake, I have read of kids getting suspended for having a nail file (weapon) or a toy water pistol Yep, anyone who would mistake this for a weapon needs their heads examined

Speaking of zero tolerance. Here is one with a positive ending:
There’s a happy ending to a story from last week…Cody Chitwood is the Cobb County, Georgia, high school student who was charged with a felony after school officials discovered he had a fishing knife…in his tackle box…inside his locked car, out in the parking lot. They claimed it violated the school’s zero tolerance policy on weapons, which I assume was written by a school of fish. Cody was facing a possible 10 years in prison. But, over the weekend, I spoke to his attorney, who spoke to the D.A., who realized how foolish the whole thing was. The charge was dropped, and Cody’s plans to join the Air Force after school are back on track. Even better, this case and the publicity people like me gave it have convinced county officials that their zero tolerance policy needs an injection of common sense. Let’s hope it starts a nationwide wave. If anything needs to be filleted with a fishing knife, it’s our hidebound zero tolerance policies, so I can finally stop reporting stories of innocent kids being suspended or arrested for pointing a fish stick or eating a gun-shaped Pop-Tart.

I'm a little surprised that those of you who are parents & have read this are seemingly tolerant of the school's reach.

Their not that bad around here .....yet. There will be isolated incidents from time to time though, mostly from the brain dead teachers that went to Cracker jack university.

My son almost got expelled from elementary school for taking apart a little pencil sharpener and using the tiny blades to play swords with his friend in the lunchroom. I talked to the principal and he let it slide though. He was a tall black guy and really funny. I later on found out why he was so funny, he was drunk. My son found a beer cap in his office and he ended up getting arrested for a DUI and transferred to a different school.
Apparently the schools over here don't have zero tolerance policies for alcohol. Or maybe they just apply to the kids and not the principal .

Who said that? I think it is an absolutely stupid policy and everyone involved in attempting to support it should be shot and quartered. There's no room for common sense in this world anymore.
Locally, I read a story about a guy who has the full support of his neighbors to add a second story addition on to his house. The problem is, halfway through the project, they discovered the original house was built 3 inches too close to the neighbor's property. The neighbor doesn't care but to legally change those boundary lines, they'd have to hire an attorney and communicate with the neighbor who is in a care institute a 1,000 miles away (estimated cost: $10,000). The city is reneging on his building permit because of that 3 inch encroachment and they want him to start the process all over or, no problem here, right?, just move the original house 3 inches and add on from there. WTF? The world has gone crazy.

No one said it. I took the silence to be tolerance. I wanted parents to be vocal in their outrage.

Maybe the silence was due to just another version of school board stupidity. We have had a bunch of those threads in here.
This case is getting a lot of attention, I was hearing it on the radio in Subway this morning.
Wonder if its possible for any school board to learn some common sense?

This young lady either started the lie or the cop covered for her and it got too big too fast...something like that. They've refunded the scholarship money...she was at the party, drinking. http://boston.barstoolsports.com/around-...-thing-up/

Holy fuck!!! Thank you for posting that. Interesting how the initial story got tons of coverage and the real story didn't. Lying bitch!
By: Tom Duggan – October 22, 2013 - Law Enforcement sources tell the Valley Patriot this morning that the media hype surrounding North Andover High School student Erin Cox being suspended for allegedly giving her friend a ride from a drinking party was … a lie. Law enforcement sources in Boxford and North Andover told the Valley Patriot that social media posts show other students at the underage drinking party had posted on social media sites calling Cox a “liar” for claiming she was not at the underage drinking party when it was raided by police. Parents of children at the drinking party posted on the WGBH Boston blog, stating that all students at the party were driven home by parents, none were driven home by students and that Erin was at the party for a long time prior to the arrival of police. Sources in North Andover say that donations already given to Cox are being returned. Erin Cox is being charged with being a minor in possession of alcohol and is being arraigned at Lawrence District court today at 9AM. “Social media posts by other minors at the party were very reveling,” a North Andover Police Officer told the Valley Patriot Monday, asking that his name not be used. “What the media reported was the details of the student and her family and their attorney, and they just ran with it as if her version was fact. We now know that’ her version is in dispute, and there is a lot of evidence to show she was at that party a lot longer than she claimed and her family is telling people on social media that they are no longer accepting donations.”

They've actually returned funding they received via go fund. I'm originally from that area...the details were out long before even that one news article link I posted. The web of private school kids at the party, towns involved, sports teams. SJP, a local school lost a football game supposedly due to three being suspended after being at this party. The kids were ticked at this girl and tweeting up a storm! I'm still shocked most of the state, never I d the country heard about this. The story simply died once this was published. Glad to see what you just posted.
To the next kid that actually does try to do the right thing...good luck, this brat ruined your chances at any ody ever believing you!
Lots of money, lots of connections, lots of cover ups....
