That's the problem I have when people O.D.
They have to be aware that at any point they're ingesting drugs, they could die from engaging in their habit, and yet they choose the drug over their kids (in this instance at least).
As you stated, addicts are just weak-willed people, and I agree.
Now, Hoffman is being memorialized and yet he's dead because he CHOSE to jump back into being a junkie.
He had 50+ bags of the stuff in his apartment? That's not a one-time thing obviously. He had planned to partake quite extensively.
I honestly have very little sympathy for those that have ruined their lives by addiction.

It seems very selfish to me as well, suicide is something I have contemplated in the past and when I was young, dumb and full of cum I drank too much (not everyday like Sal but still too much).
The thought of the consequences of my actions on my family and friends is what pulled me back from the brink.

Addicts are NOT weak willed people. Just goes to show how stupid you are MWS. If you don't know what you are talking about, it's best just to shut the fuck up. Addiction is a strong powerful disease that is stronger than any strong willed person, which is why it has claimed so many lives. It takes an army to get someone clean. It takes expertise and support. That is based on research not some ignoramous bigotry.

So if I want to get pissed as a fart every night I've got a disease?
I could be a “functioning alcoholic” but I choose not to be.

No.
If it is an uncontrollable urge or obsession . . . then "Yes".

Uncontrollable urge?
Does that let rapists off the hook then?
They can plead 'your honor, I had an uncontrollable urge, and, that's their 'get out of jail free card'. I mean, it would then be an addiction and they need professional help.
And, who then gets to define uncontrollable urge? Seems like it could vary from person to person.
When does a person cross-over into the realm of 'I take no responsibility for my actions'?

I was directly relating my response to drinking . . . choice or disease.
Diseases run the gamut of bio/psycho/social underpinnings.
Pedophiles, instead, of rapists would have been a better choice for your argument, as pedophilia can't be "cured".
Weird how you went with an action primarily directed to women to make your point.
And you ignored the obsession component, too.
Why?
You might wanna consider these other factors: Tolerance, dependency, compulsion and abuse when relating to chemical addiction.
You were a compulsive gambler . . . compulsion is a component found in rapists, too.

Nice little tie-in with my gambler turned rapist comment. Or vice-versa. Which was it? What do you suspect?
Your drawn-out answers that deflect on to me make it seem like you're covering for somebody?
So, who's off the hook for their actions? Who can not be held accountable because they have a disease? Who gets to say 'I had an uncontrollable urge' and get away with it?

The Courts.
You can't be this daft . . . Affluenza ring a bell?
This kid had an urge to behave as he always did without fearing consequences.
Again, stoopid, I was SPECIFICALLY relating my response to drinking.
I stand corrected . . . you ARE daft.

I do not think that a person should get off because they were drunk or on drugs. I do believe addiction is a disease. However, you can't use that disease as an excuse for bad behavior or crime. At some point the addict has to take responsibility for themselves and their actions.
Take Nephew and his $11k night at the whore house. He wanted me to file a claim with the bank for fraudulent charges because he was wasted and they took advantage of him. Well who's fat was it that he was drunk? He says he blacked out. Again, who's fault was that? He clearly has a drinking problem. He has had several black outs. The weekend after TG he went to a strip club and spent $700. Luckily I just happened to check the account that night and saw it. Called the club and spoke with the manager and he took the card and reversed the charges. Again, it was I was drunk and they took advantage of me. The family got together and got him a spot in rehab but he refused to go. He doesn't think he needs it. Drinking is just his lifestyle. Ok so is stealing huge amounts of money from your father your lifestyle too? At what point does this kid say hey I'm doing stupid shit when I drink. Shit that could get me killed (Korean pimps and drug dealers) or put in jail (again drugs and felony theft.). Maybe I should get some help to change this "lifestyle" I'm living. He got a job as a financial rep. I wouldn't let him manage my Monopoly money. He is totally untrustworthy and when my money is gone he will blame it on someone else. They took advantage of him.

Are you seriously trying to draw an analogy between getting pissed as a fart every night and raping someone?
Getting pissed as fart isn't illegal (unless you drive home afterwards) rape is. Last time I checked it was anyway.

We were discussing the apparently very loose definition of the phrase 'uncontrollable urge.'

I have a family member who is we suspect a drug addict, but at the very least an alcoholic. She is pure evil. You wouldn't trust her as far as you could throw her. She would steal your loose change. She is highly manipulative and a liar and a thief. She is a scammer, and all her teeth are rotten out of her head. She has false teeth (only after they had been paid for by another family member). So I think there is addicts and there is addicts. Mr Seymour Hoffman is not in the same category as someone who is vicious and cruel.

Same addiction, just a difference in the means to fund it.

SPECIFICALLY relating to drinking . . . nothing else.
Unlike your "uncontrollable urge" to perv your coworkers breasts.
You seem to keep missing this.

I know. But I promised Mike I would look out for the kids. I'm not going to be taken advantage off though. My mother was right about these kids though. I'm glad my parents are not here to see them. And I'm glad Mike passed without knowing about the $11k. I can only imagine how hurt and disappointed he would be.
Addiction is a very powerful disease. I would never diminish that. However, I get to the point with some people where my sympathy cup is empty. Matt was GIVEN a top notch education. He was GIVEN a $40k truck. He has a beautiful home to live in rent free until he gets his business going. He is about to be GIVEN a substantial amount of money that could be used to purchase a home or invest or whatever. You get the point. And he has an opportunity to address his "issues" in a rehab center. But no. He chooses to continue on his path of destruction. Drinking. Smoking pot. Doing coke. Spending money. Another example is my BIL. He has been in rehab about 10 times. Finally he stuck it out this last time and has been sober for a year and a half. But he lost his high paying job with the state, wife, couldn't see his kids for a long time, bled his parents practically dry. And my ex. You would think losing his wife, kids, house, boat would do it. Nope. Every lady he has dated since we split has left him. And now his kids want nothing to do with him. His family wants nothig to do with him. He still drinks.
I rambled on here. My point is at some point a person needs to dig deep and get some help. If losing everything that is important to you isn't enough incentive, what is? Or if being given a golden opportunity to start your life isn't enough, what is? I run out of give a shit for people that squander their opportunities and families away.
