Sure looks sturdy enough!
It's good that you're a man of many talents, you don't need to buy no stinkin "store bought things".

That's great! I want to carve out a big burl I found in the woods (but haven't cut it off yet) but I think you have to soak them in some special liquid to keep it from splitting. Do you know what that is? And do you use a drill press to cut the majority of the material out?

Your talking about Stabilizing the wood and there are several products out there to do that with. Hasn't been my thing but I do know who to ask.
I used an Adz forged by one of my internet Blacksmith friends. Its a very sharp tool looks like a gouge on a handle like a hammer. Did all the rough cutting with a carving hatchet, then the middle rough with the adz and finished it with the spoon knives. For your Burl, do you ave access to a lathe? They make some beautiful bowls but I understand they are very hard to do as you have to go very slow or they will explode off the machine.

I like copper, nice and malleable. Did you beat that on a mold with leather covering it? Gold would be fun to work with. Do you have the twisty tool to twist the square rod?

I used a big steel block called a Swage Block, it has several shapes molded in it and you basically hammer the material into the shape, I use a Planishing hammer for this.
To do the twist I have a wrench with a handle welded on it. Clamp 1 end of the material to twist in a vise and just twist it with the wrench by hand

Very nice, Six! I need some shelf brackets & the handle on that ladle is just the kind of iron I'd like to have them made from. I'm shooting for a country/rustic look.

got a little sketch of what ya want?

No, I don't. It's just an idea in my head. I'll know when I see them. It's nothing fancy and I'm pretty sure the shelving will be pine - poor, gets no respect, pine.

I'll see what I can come up with

Oh my goodness. Please don't. I know you have precious little free time and I really don't want you to devote it to an idea I have for brackets. I was just posting about what I'd like to do. The Amish make things using the same iron you did with the ladle, I'm drawn to stuff like that, there is nothing contemporary about my home, I don't do fancy. I think that's a very cool skill you have. |
