updating is underway to end it.
U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder said Monday that he will soon unveil long-planned Justice Department guidance aimed at ending racial profiling.
The president asked Holder to set up the meetings in the wake of clashes between protesters and police in Ferguson, Missouri.
Shortly, Holder said he will announce updated Justice Department guidance regarding profiling by federal law enforcement. This will institute rigorous new standards - and robust safeguards - to help end racial profiling, once and for all.
"This new guidance will be to the very highest standards of fair and effective policing."
So, do you believe police racial profiling should end, could end, will it end?
Do you racial profile, if so why? If not why?

Everyone racial profiles. The Blacks do it to the Whites and the Whites do it to the Blacks. It is impossible to stop. But it is the actions that take place after talking that really matter. All people should be judged by their actions and sometimes their words. Words are more powerful than a tank. And people say stupid things. Some are just to proud to honestly take back their words.

Agree.
Unfortunately, words can & do sometimes lead to killing. Holder can make his guidlines, however, there will always be those that will do what they want to do, no matter who says what.
Do I profile, sometimes. As sometimes actions of others require it to be addressed.

I don't have a problem with profiling, easy for me to say, I'm an old white woman. I profile all the time. I see big, ol', white trash looking, badly dressed caucasian women being loud and obnoxious with their screaming, badly behaved children and I just know she is as stupid as the day is long.

I have conversations in my head about it all the time. There's the voice, when I'm at the airport that says "look, a towel head...terrorist"! Then the other voice says "Sue, just because he has a towel on his head does NOT mean he's a terrorist". We usually go back and forth for awhile but the rational side usually wins.
I honestly don't know how you "end" racial profiling. I can only imagine it would involve extensive community level studies. Town X is 50% white, 50% people of color. The police of Town X pull over or question people of color at a rate of 10 to every 1 white person. Disproportionate. However, people of color in Town X are convicted of 80% of the town's felonies....
It's a good thing I'm not a mathematician/statistician. I wouldn't know what the fuck to do with that kind of information.

That's exactly what goes through my mind at the airport too, and will hopefully not happen to me next Monday!

In regards to the turbans - we know what some of the bad people look like who want to hurt us as Americans. There are people out there who would just as soon put a bullet in your head or fly you into a building without hesitation. I don't think anyone should be troubled because one's thoughts lead in that direction.

I don't think of myself as the hero type, but I be damned if I would not try to thwart those terrorists by any and all means possible!

That's the kick. You cannot legislate or make laws on what people are thinking. Racial profiling is what people do. No law written by anyone can change human nature. Its a defense mechanism and not really so bad. No matter how you try it just wont happen. Some people do not accept reality though.

I don't give a crap what "laws" they pass. With all the shit going on in the world, it would be stupid not to be aware and on guard. I think everyone profiles, even the libs....it's human nature since 9/11.

9⁄ 11 certainly did open up many people's eyes towards terrorism. Unfortunately though, not all eyes!

We should just rename it 'undocumented profiling', because profiling has to be done.
Walk into any bank these days, and you see a sign that says "please remove your hat/hood and sunglasses"-you know why? Somewhere along the line a profile was created by someone that bank robbers tend to wear hats & sunglasses.
Without profiling society would be at a disadvantage.

It can be done. If China and the US can agree to terms, they have the military firepower to make this dream a reality.

^ Those are the updated/expanded federal profiling ban categories.
Federal bans on profiling based on race and ethnicity have been in place since 2003.
The expanded profiling bans don't apply to borders, airports, or in intelligence operations. They apply to FBI and DHS agencies, including federal air marshals, Homeland Security investigations, and the Coast Guard.
The bans do not cover local and state law enforcement agencies (unless they're participating in a federal investigation). But, Holder will be encouraging all LE agencies to adopt similar profiling bans later today.
" Profiling by law enforcement is not only wrong, it is profoundly misguided and ineffective -- because it wastes precious resources and undermines the public trust. Particularly in light of certain recent incidents we've seen at the local level -- and the widespread concerns about trust in the criminal justice process which so many have raised throughout the nation -- it's imperative that we take every possible action to institute strong and sound policing practices.," Holder said in a statement provided by the Justice Department in anticipation of Monday's announcement.
The ACLU is dissatisfied with the exceptions in the profiling bans. " It's baffling that even as the government recognizes that bias-based policing is patently unacceptable, it gives a green light for the FBI, TSA, and CBP to profile racial, religious and other minorities at or in the vicinity of the border and in certain national security contexts, and does not apply the Guidance to most state and local law enforcement," ACLU Washington Legislative Office Director Laura W. Murphy said in a statement.
