Now that would be a party with plenty of fun bags to hold our old bones for sure.
Anyone have a favorite historical site or landmark they're particularly fond of?

These old fun bags wouldn't be holding any of those old bones.
But, I could see Donovan being an interesting low-maintenance person with whom to explore west coast ghost-towns.
I think that would be a cool road trip.

Well I will say I enjoy it a little better when someone else has done the hard work and I can take my time staring at things behind glass. But there is also a very special thrill in discovering a hidden object or site that doesn't exist for anyone but you. Something lost to time that permanently connects you to the person who last used it hundreds or thousands of years ago.
True story: when my son was maybe 6 years old we visited his maternal aunt in central NY and one morning went for a walk along a path that contained the ruins of an old textile mill and grounds. My wife and her sister went power walking through and we're intent on exercise. But the boy and I meandered, exploring overgrown side trails and bushes and nooks and crannies while I explained on his level what it meant to study ruins. We happened on a foundation that was some sort of old cottage, littered with old debris and bits of China etc. I pointed to a sliver mostly buried and said "ssuppose we dug up this bit of China and then we could see what it was, who used it, how old, maybe find some other pieces and put it back together."
So of course he wanted to and we started to dig. And I'll be damn ed if it wasn't a full antique China teacup buried in the dirt, completely intact. Completely by accident and hooked the boy on the rush of discovery.
One of the coolest memories he and I share that's ours alone. His mom never got it. Her mind only saw a dirty old cup.
Thank god I am oblivious to the opinions of others while caught in the blinding splendor of my own cleverness.

You keep threatening me like that HotD and I'll show up on your doorstep. I'm just begging for an excuse to go back west where I belong. Ghost town exploring with a road (hhot) dog who's also easy on the eyes in case no spooks show up? Sold!

I've only been to two ghost towns.
One was in Carson City, Nevada as a kid on a Winnebago road trip with a bunch of my cousins (my uncle played Hotel California on the 8 track like 5 times, he loved him some Eagles).
I really would like to check out more of them some day at a slower pace without all the en-route chaos. The drive between destinations and hitting the diners and hole-in-the-wall bars along the way is half the fun.

I left you in the middle of nowhere with Duchess, Jimbone.
How the hell can you complain about that?

I'll take that seven days a week, and twice on Sunday

Sorry Jimbone. She knows a diva when she sees one. You'd be all "EWWWW this ghost town is DUSTY don't they ever CLEAN?"
And then HotD and I would commerce arguing over the practical application of cleaning products to ghost towns, segue into the existence of ghosts, spirits, souls, and god, getting more and more feverish and whipping out factoids and data support, and pretty much forget any of you were there.
ETA::and then we'd make out.

Assholes.
I thought you'd probably be a similar road tripper to my friend MT in Oregon, Donovan.
He always knows some history of the place in advance, doesn't require an agenda or whip out an annoying "to do" list, doesn't have a problem when I take off solo for a while if we wanna check out different things, doesn't mind that I don't talk much, knows how to avoid arrest and bar fights, would rather shut the fuck up than argue on vacation (and especially not in the car), and knows there can be no making out...
NOW, I'm thinking I should pull over and make you hitch, or pull a runner on your ass at the first stop in Bodie.

Nonono. I'd pay to watch the back & forth of you both discussing data support & the whipping out of factoids, oohh la la. It makes my heart race a little thinking of it, I'm filled with anticipation. *licks lips* Please don't deprive me.
