So some just need, for emotional reasons, an outlet and there it is ... since they can't get it out as much as they'd like in person.

Of course people put on a fake persona on the internet. You can be whatever you want and no one is the wiser. I completely agree that people will act tough or pretend to be wealthy or educated and treat people like crap because they can. And the internet is the only place they can get away with it. Personlly, I don't have the time or the inclination to bother with that drama.

what the internet created that never existed before was a culture that did not deal "face to face". no longer was an actual meeting needed to interact with others. And as it grew you could communicate with millions of people and never have to actual hear them OR see them in person. Dating was the obvious winner in all of this and I think the internet for all of its criticism has been a huge positive for dating throughout the world. many people who never had the social skills to meet people in public, now can meet many people online. they make friends, have real emotional relationships, and some find off line mates because of this new ability to meet/learn/get to know people without ever having to walk up to them and say "hi".
But as positive as that is, there also was obviously a negative side that is being discussed in this thread, and happens all over the net every day. This lack of actual interaction also created the ability to put on a fake persona (whether tougher, or cooler, or completely different then the person actual was). With no fear of ever being proven as anything other then what you "say you are" people could pretend all day long.
What I have found is that eventually you have to be "real" or everything is make-believe. Eventually if you ever want to get up off your couch and interact with an actual human you are going to have to be honest and show your true self or be exposed as a fraud.

I met my husband in an online role playing chat room. I'm certainly able to find people to date 'offline', but the internet gives you... well heck, essentially the entire world. Living where I did at the time I met my husband, my options were pretty limited. Just not many 'attractive' choices were available and aside from that, meeting people in 'bars' just isn't my idea of a good time. Trying to meet like-minded souls by things like social groups, again often narrows your prospects too much. You CAN get to know someone pretty well online, but at Liquid said, there is also the aspect of people trying to 'hide' who they really are and pulling huge scams on other folks.

I read a story once, from a gal who had an online relationship with a guy over several years. They were very serious and she loved him. They had finally decided to get together, when she discovered (I forget the details) that the guy had 'died'. It later turned out, that it was actually a middle-aged woman 'scamming' her emotionally before moving on to someone else.

My husband and I are no longer together, but we lasted 11 years... and that's not a bad run these days.

Actually my post was right on topic because I gave a perfect example of how people lie on the internet to gain respect. They would like to think they are impressing people, but no one really gives a fuck either way. Well I guess some people give a fuck, but they usually have a few screws loose themselves.

There are only a few people here that put what they actually do IRL on their mock resume. Yours says death and sarcasm, mine says ENT specialist. What the fuck isthe difference?
