Jesus Camp
#1
So the weekend yielded a quiet one for us. Yard work, Star Trek movie (best ST ever!) and some lazing in front of the idiot box.

Flipping through the channels we see on the listing Jesus Camp on A&E channel. Out of curiosity of wtf that could possibly be, we turn it on.

Fuck all..... it was like watching a train wreck if you're one of those kinds of ghouls. I could not believe what I was seeing. I was appalled and disturbed at the thing.

This is a camp run by the Evangelicals to INDOCTRINATE CHILDREN into GOD'S ARMY so they can spread the word and recruit more little demented soldiers.

Now I know why people get all fucked up when the Catholics are mentioned but I gotta tell you, no matter how fucked up the Catholics are, they will NEVER compare to this shit.

I can tell you that Jesus would NOT approve of this in hisnameif he were alive today! All that man wanted was for people to be nice to each other and live peacefully. What a fucked up interpretation organized religion has made of his teachings!

Interviews with one woman stood out - she said democracy is good but we need to think about changing things because the way of Jesus is better. If we have to brainwash children to do this, then that is God's will.

You should have seen them brainwashing kids as young as 5 about abortion too. I was ANGRY watching this shit. You don't do that to children. You don't brainwash them. It's abusive to say the least.

I had to turn this off after a few minutes, it was that disturbing. I can't even make the right words come out here to tell you all about this but I would encourage you ALL to view it at least once to see for yourself, and then start writing and calling your TV provider to get that shit off A&E. Write to A&E too. It's awful. Absolutely awful and running it on the TV has the greater chance of people falling for this shit than them getting upset over it.

I've heard of it and although it sounds fascinating, I'm afraid it would enrage me. I don't like or approve of organized religion anyway, and this is one of the biggest perversions of 'god's word' I've heard of.

I was under the impression the documentary wasn't favorable to these people. If anyone finds this sort of thing inspiring, then it's too late for them in the first place.

You're probably very right on that!

Yeah but why show the ones who had no idea where to find stuff like this where to go?

I just can't get those kids out of my head repeating over and over again the little chants they kept feeding them.

I haven't seen this but, your description leads me to believe that these people are no better than the middle eastern extremists who do what they do in the name of Allah...Seriously, I don't see what the fuck the difference is if you take murder out of the equation...To me personally, God is love, nothing more, nothing less...I don't even recognize the God that these kinds of people refer to.

This kind of thing is on the increase in the US and in Great Britain.

Faith based schools (which I am firmly against, a childs education should be 100% secular) are springing up more and more on both sides of the atlantic.

They are basically just institutes of brainwashing and indoctrination.
We need to punish the French, ignore the Germans and forgive the Russians - Condoleezza Rice.

Saw the movie a couple of years ago and shuttered at the thought of the BS propaganda those kids where forcefed.

The more science explains what's up the less you would think these camps would draw people in.

Sadly, the opposite seems to be true.

There was a movie? ::blink::I would no way be able to sit through 2 hours of that insanity.

Well, this kind of brainwashing had to start in the home before they sent them to this sick-o camp.

I grew up Orthodox Catholic and my father and mother believed. They were not over the top loony religious freaks, but they took us to church every Sunday and did the "normal" thing without it being fanatical in any way.

Now, we used to go to catechism every Wednesday at the local Catholic school..... I will never forget the time I asked the nun, "If God made the universe, who made God?"

She went batshit! Slapped my face and said we are not to ask such questions!

I must have been in the second grade then.

When our teachers taught us about evolution, I was fascinated compared to the eye rolling and disbelief of the crap I was fed about religion.

I have no problem with anyone believing in what they want to - it's their right. I DO have a problem with shit like what goes on in that Jesus camp business.

I have also said elsewhere that I have no problem with teachers answering kids' questions regarding the differences between the different religions of the world. Just be generally knowledgeable about them. Do NOT preach or worse - proselytize the kids!

But I feel they should have their questions answered fairly by anyone who asks without feeling bad for asking and without a biased explanation about it.

Sounds like catechism on Saturday mornings back when I was little.

I've watched this movie, and known kids that are like this.
Freaking crazy.
My kids go to catholic school, they don't teach nearly what they used to. I ask my 13 y/o questions about her religion class and ask if she is learning this and that and she looks at me like I'm crazy and says they don't mention anything like that.

Lumpy, we didn't have too much 'chanting' or anything near the likes of this shit in Jesus Camp. I may have had it a bit more mild due to factors like location or something but there was no brainwashing whatsoever.
When I found I did not have to make confirmation (I found out I was baptized and confirmed at the same time because we were of the Eastern Right)and told my mom I didn't want to continue chatechism and stop going to church on Sunday she said it was OK by her and the church and school never pushed the issue.

My best friend growing up used to go to Catholic school and went to Catholic high school.

We used to compare what we learned and it wasn't until I told her we were going to the Museum of Natural History (in NYC in what I think was the 3rd grade) to see the dinosaur bones she had no idea they existed! Needless to say, as soon as we started going into the city by ourselves that was the first place I took her!

There were other aspects of education that she excelled in like the 3 "R's" but we eventually caught up with them there.

They were told all history before Christ was born was "the devil's work".

I haven't talked to her in nearly 30 years now and I wonder if she believed all that crap they spewed against evolution?

Maybe all the parochial schools should have the equivalent to catechism for world history and evolution?

I watched that when it came out on DVD. I pretty much went from gaping to steaming through the whole thing. I agree that the documentary isn't really flattering to the fanatics, and I think only people who are of that mindset would see it as a positive film.

It made me want to go bust those kids out of their cages and liberate them.
