Is there anyway to separate 'real' lurkers from the various bots? I saw that on another site; they actually had it broken down by google bot, yahoo bot, etc. I thought that was kind of cool but if it's some crazy add-on that would affect the stability of this place, then nevermind. I'd hate to suggest something that might slow down the forum even more for poor OP.

It's already in place and should be activated, Lumpy.

In the admin cp, there is a whole page with a list of like a kabillion search engine spiders that you can edit or delete to allow to spider the site. I don't delete any on my sites as those are 'good' bots.

Spam bots are the problem for boards and this software has a pretty good prevention system for that built right in. Unfortunately spammers are now joining in human form but with strict limitations for registrations and permissions, IP checks etc, these are few and far between.

Damn, you're right! I see we've got a google bot sniffing around right now... I'm surprised there aren't more. So I wonder how/why we had 100 lurkers recently, that seems extraordinary to me.

The Bots: 2 portion is the "Good Bots" Ant mentioned. But I should write a plugin that displays random messages using javascript to the actual Lurkers

It would track their IP, and anyone who visits more than 3 times and isn't a registered bot or user starts getting messages like:
Hey you pansy! Stop lurking and join up! We don't bite. Much.

It would track their IP, and anyone who visits more than 3 times and isn't a registered bot or user starts getting messages like:
