Apparently baby bottles were promoted back in the Victorian Era. Women thought they were a godsend because it allowed their babies to feed themselves and freed up the mother's time. They were little more than a nipple attached to a long, slender, flexible tube of various lengths then attached to the bottle. During this period there were older women who wrote books to help young women with their new households and offered guidance on managing their homes, their servants, arranging flowers, etc., things of that nature. One of the topics covered were the baby bottles. New mothers were told the nipples & tubes only needed to be cleaned every 2-3 weeks. Hear me heave. At the time this was killing 8 out of 10 kids!

That kid is old enough to drink from a cup or a goblet I guess is what they called it back in those days. Duchess likes to drink from the goblet of hate.

More like the goblet of truth mixed with a heavy dose of reality.

I don’t even buy this story. I highly doubt 8 out of 10 kids died from tube encrusted spoiled milk, no one dies over spoiled milk. They might cry over it, but not die. Something sinister was going on.

They died from the bacteria that grew in the nipple & tube. They didn't have the kind of drugs back then that we have access to today.

Back when I got WIC thirty years ago which is a government nutritional supplement program for women and their babies, they had a sign up saying not to put pot liquor in your baby’s bottle. Pot liquor is the juice from collard greens. It’s mighty good with some corn bread, but it’s often laden with sodium and spices. I remember looking at the sign and thinking wtf, are people really giving their infants smoked ham hock and collard green infused juice so much that they had to post a sign.

I guess maybe it was an old southern wives tale that the liquid from the greens was nutritious for babies, but they have sensitive digestive systems and it was making them sick. Especially when it’s full of nitrates and hot sauce. Crazy ass black folks.

One time I came home from work and my daughter had a 104 fever and my husband had her wrapped up in blankets and feeding her hot soup. He said that’s what they did when he was a kid, unlucky for me the motherfucker is still alive.
