Nobody should have the "freedom" to be a dangerous and irresponsible asshole.
I was in a car smash in 1996, the driver my mate Chris, said that if he hadn't been wearing his seatbelt he wouldn't have been able to control the skid the smash sent us into and we would have dropped over a 20 foot embankment.
It's about personal freedom.
You were free not to get in the car with your mate, but you CHOSE to. There certainly are some risks associated with freedoms, and we all should be able to weigh and decide for OURSELVES which precautions we choose to take when dealing with our own safety.
I like the "if we weren't" argument. There is a situation like that to support either side.
