MOBILE, Alabama -- John DeBlase,who authorities say admitted to dumping the lifeless bodies of his 2 young children along the northern Gulf Coast, briefly appeared in a Mobile courtroom this morning for an arraignment hearing.
DeBlase, charged with 2 counts of aggravated child abuse and abuse of a corpse, was escorted into Mobile County District Judge Charlie McKnight's courtroom this morning. The father's hair was disheveled and he wore a small pair of black glasses. He rested his handcuffed arms on a podium as the judge asked whether he had hired a lawyer. He replied that he had not.
McKnight then appointed attorney Jim Sears, who was not in the courtroom, and scheduled a preliminary hearing for Jan. 4. DeBlase is being held in jail in lieu of $206,000 bail.
