How can any driver get off the bus and not check for kids? Especially when driving little ones. Apparently the kid called out to her as she was getting off and she never stopped. As of the other day, he still will not get back on the bus.
School district fires bus driver accused of leaving 3-year-old on bus
A Yates County school bus driver accused of leaving a child alone on a school bus has been fired from the Penn Yan Central School District.
District Superintendent Ann Orman today confirmed that Penn Yan’s Board of Education voted unanimously Wednesday night to fire the driver, Janet Lane, 55.
Lane, who worked for the district for about two years, was terminated immediately, Orman said.
Lane was charged with endangering the welfare of a child after she allegedly left a 3-year-old unattended on her bus last week.
According to Penn Yan police, Lane is accused of leaving a child on board her bus after an early dismissal day for elementary school and Head Start students.
She will answer the misdemeanor charge in Penn Yan Village Court.
Karen Wagar said her 3-year-old son, Kenny Wagar, is the child who was left behind.
The boy spent nearly three hours alone inside the bus, which was parked at the district’s bus facility.
Part of the Head Start program, Kenny was dismissed from school at 12:15 p.m. Friday and was supposed to be dropped off at a local church after-school program. When Wagar went to the program to pick her son up shortly after 3 p.m., she discovered he wasn’t there. She called the district bus garage and Kenny was quickly found, still strapped in a car seat.
Orman said the district is working closely with police. A full review of the district’s driver training procedures and policies is under way, she said.
