Well, I believe they actually were considered threats to our national security. Iraq had the 'supposed' WMD's and Afghanistan was the training ground for Al-Qaeda. At the time, November of 2001, 90% of the American public agreed that something 'had' to be done in retribution for 9/11.
Now, in hindsight, it's easy to be critical of these wars and what they were really for. I believe the Iraq invasion was little George's present to his dad for unfinished business with Saddam. I think that one WAS personal.
As for Afghanistan, what a nightmare. Trying to form alliances with tribes is not exactly an easy thing. Plus, the history of that country with invading forces. A losing proposition, unless you go in with idea of obliterating the place and starting over.
So many of our brave young men (and women) have lost their lives over there. What a desolate spot. Halfway around the world. We've know for a few years now that there probably won't be a 'victory' there, and we still don't know how to 'exit'.
