KALAMAZOO — Eric Zapata is the Kalamazoo Public Safety officer who was shot and killed Monday night, Chief Jeff Hadley said.
Zapata, 35, is a 10-year veteran of the force.
Police said Zapata was shot and killed after he and other officers were dispatched on a report of shots fired in the 1400 block of Hays Avenue in Kalamazoo's Edison neighborhood.
Zapata is the first Kalamazoo Public Safety officer killed in the line of duty.
Zapata has three children, Hadley said.
