With all due respect, I think you are giving the perps too much credit. Why should you assume that they were as smart as you or I or the rest of the Mock membership? It's unlikely.
Those assigned to carry out humiliations or beatings or torture or murder if "necessary" are usually the dimmest bulbs in the chandelier.
Whoever sent them probably considered the location and opening of the imagined safe to be information the perps could easily extract by threats and force from Johnny and Lisa; and the belief that there was a safe full of cash and drugs came from someone impressed by the location of the home in "richville" as someone called it, its appearance, or something Johnny may have done or said.
I don't think you should necessarily apply your wisdom to the brains of the perpetrators in this case.
