We don't have to agree, or even believe the same thing, but we are tolerant of others who believe differently, as long as it is not forced upon us.Liquid Wrote:Sin - For me it is pretty simple how I feel about god and religion. MF and I have discussed this in the past on other sites.
1) I do not believe in a "god" or supreme being.
2) I think religion is an organized cult of people worshiping a well written novel.
3) And this is most important - I have ABSOLUTELY no issue or malice with people who do believe in "god" or a supreme being or religion. If it works for you, great. Whatever helps you get through your day and to the next one is your problem.
So we see things fairly alike. You don't believe, I do. I totally agree about organized religions being cults; ALL of them. I have problems with the Bible, even though I know it well, I don't really "get it" and it can be interpreted into whatever way the reader chooses to interpret it. I don't live my life based on what a book tells me.
I don't have issue with anyone's beliefs either. As long as you don't try to cram your shit down my throat and tell me I am wrong and you are right just because your religion says you're right.
The only extremely religious person I have no problem with is my Gramps. He has been very involved in his church for 70 years and I was actually raised on the church he subscribes to. When I was 15, I had a wake-up call and left the church and never looked back. And even though my Gramps still attends his church, he is a wise man and does not try to push me into coming back. He is happy with his church and happy with me the way I am. My Gramps is the best. 89 years old and still totally independent, drives to Tennessee twice a month to visit his girlfriend, has all his marbles and is smarter than any person I know. Including me.
As far as your Gramps - he is a perfect example of how religion HAS worked for him in his life, his social interaction with others, his daily life, etc. And that is a great thing, because it worked for him and made him happier, which ultimately is all that really matters to each individual.
I have never said that there are not some positive social aspects to a group of people who gather together to share a common interest. It just will be a different setting for me then one where the main "common interest" is a religion.
