Prosecutors seeking death penalty for Basinger in Putzbach murder

A Euclid man, who police say claimed the Russian Mob hired him to kill a Willowick resident, has been indicted on 16 counts.
In addition, prosecutors will seek the death penalty for Kyle Basinger, a 21-year-old suspect in the death of William Andrew Fayne Putzbach, also 21.
“This was certainly a proper case where the death penalty should have been brought to the grand jury,” Lake County Prosecutor Charles Coulson said.
Basinger — who remains in jail on $1 million bond — was indicted on three counts of aggravated murder with death penalty specifications.
He is also charged with four counts of murder, three counts of aggravated robbery, two counts of kidnapping, felonious assault, theft, grand theft of a motor vehicle and gross abuse of a corpse.
The victim’s body was found April 17 in the trunk of his Pontiac Grand Am at the Willoughby Hills Towers apartment complex. Police said he was likely killed on or about April 10.
Putzbach died from a compressed neck and blunt trauma to the head, officials said.
Basinger’s two co-defendants have also been indicted but will not face the death penalty.
Ronald Shirer, and Nathaniel Brown, both 22, were each charged with 14 counts.
Shirer and Brown were indicted on two counts of aggravated murder, six counts of murder, aggravated robbery, two counts of kidnapping, two counts of felonious assault and gross abuse of a corpse.
Shirer and Brown were roommates at the Willoughby Hills Towers.
They are in jail on $500,000 bonds.
