Action News cameras were the only ones in court as 52-year-old James Thomas Bommer was charged with one count of dismembering and mutilating a dead body and one count of obstruction of justice.

A 52-year-old Gibraltar man has been charged with mutilating the body of a 32-year-old Gibraltar woman whose torso was found in a suitcase last week.

James Thomas Bommer was arraigned this afternoon on charges of mutilation of a dead body, obstruction of justice and fourth habitual offender, said Assistant Prosecutor Maria Miller.

"The evidence in this case will show that the defendant dismembered the body of Ms. Prpich. Cases like this are among the most disturbing to even long time members of law enforcement," said Prosecutor Kym Worthy in a statement Saturday.

Bommer was remanded to jail without bond.A preliminary exam is set for Sept. 6 in the 33rd District Court.

On Wednesday, Bommer confessed to dismembering and disposing, but not killing, Pamela Prpich, 32, who was last seen by her family Aug. 12. A week later her brother, Michael Prpich, 29, of Dearborn found a suitcase with part of her body near the Bella Vista Condos, where she lived with her mother.

After Bommer's confession, investigators went to his home Thursday in the neighboring Park Lane Apartments. There they found more of Prpich's body in a container in a closet.

Neighbors said the Prpich and Bommer had a relationship in the past.
