Gilbert father with gun allegedly let sons beat boy, police say
A Gilbert man has been accused of refereeing a fight involving his two sons and brandishing a .45 caliber handgun to stop bystanders from intervening.
Police arrested the 33-year-old man and his two sons Tuesday after the boys allegedly broke the jaw of a 16-year-old boy during the fight as he threatened to kill anyone who intervened, according to police and court records.
At around 3 p.m. Tuesday, the man allegedly brought his sons, ages 14 and 17, to a park near Cobblestone Street and Linda Lane to engage in the after-school fight. When the man's 14-year-old son began losing the fight, the father allegedly told his older son to join in, police said.
Witnesses reported seeing the sons force the victim to the ground and repeatedly kick him in the head. The boy was transported to a hospital with a broken jaw for treatment of his injuries.
Police did not say what kind of disagreement had led up to the fight.
Officers responded to man's residence near Warner and Lindsay roads, but he refused to exit the house until it was surrounded by multiple officers, Gilbert police said. After police used a loudspeaker to alert the father, he surrendered on his own, police said.
Police arrested him on suspicion of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, threatening/intimidating, disorderly conduct with a deadly weapon and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
He was booked into the 4th Avenue Jail and his sons await charges of aggravated assault and disorderly conduct from Maricopa County Juvenile Court.
The Republic is not naming the father in order to protect the identification of the juveniles involved in the incident.
