Had a buddy tell me when they made port there, literally hundreds of women were there at the pier to scoop them up and take them home for the 3 or 4 days anchored there.
No doubt your buddy landed in Sydney during their Mardi Gras. It would also explain why the Village People dedicated a song to the Navy of all the military institutions.
I think when the American ships come to town in their uniforms and all that it's a big deal and there are alot of women about. But that's it. The fascination with US Navy has been around for generations.
And there is a huge gay population in sydney as well as sex workers.
