The whole thing bothered me then and some of the details I'm reading now make it seem highly likely there was foul play. There's no way she'd try to leave on that dingy in the middle of the night wearing only her nighty, socks and a jacket. This was a very famous actress, she wouldn't have been seen in public like that, especially since they determined she wasn't drunk and she sure as hell wouldn't attempt it being as afraid of water as she was. The bruising is just icing on the cake.
