Any religion that needs to have things like "thou shalt not kill" written down is worthless and a haven for imbeciles with no common sense.
And you know for a fact that a random killing was frowned apon before it became law? You know for certain that 2-3000 years ago it was not O.K. to kill someone for the hell of it. If a person did it they knew remorse?
It was not OK in those tribes to just kill someone for any reason. Check out the culture of the people of the Bible before the 10 Commandments in bullet point form came down the mountain. There were religions and cultures in place that were already anti-violence. They were more anti-violence than the Bible ever preached. Take, for example, Taoism. It is older than Christianity.
As for the 10 Commandments, we can improve them in a few minutes simply by swapping out the first few which have to do with God being paranoid ("I am a jealous God") about not being worshiped correctly, with items such as be kind to children, or don't treat others as property (women, slaves, etc.) By the way, in the longer versions of the 10 Commandments found not on a tablet but in the Bible, there are references to slaves ... such as warnings not to covet the slaves of others (don't covet your neighbor's property like women and slaves) and advice to give your slaves off for the Sabbath (they need to make God feel worshiped too, ya know). Thank God we were handed down the 10 Commandments.
