The trip cost probably turned out slightly less ($220+?) and the fundraising somewhere between $7,000-$8,000 (but $8k sounds so much better....). To answer your question, no, the 5th grade wasn't that big. We had four 5th grade classrooms -- around 120 students.
It was similar--a wilderness type trip with an outdoor science curriculum.
My kids moved on to middle school after that but I told the woman who took over the fundraising for the next year my thoughts about all the full scholarships and that I thought it ought to be handled differently. I did what everyone before me had done not knowing how many people were milking the system. It's fucked up.
