i stand by my comment...to me an inmate is someone in custody.
i think it would be frowned upon in a psych unit/hospital/ward to call the patients inmates. but that's just me. i don't always agree with 'definitions' as opposed to common usage. they may be technically correct but not appropriate in reality.
