I read something by a Euro person who said American mattresses and box springs were nasty. They collect dust, skin flakes, germs, fluids, mites, etc and really can't be cleaned well.

That's exactly why I get the water proof mattress pads (that don't feel waterproof).

These then perform their normal biologic functions, and their excrement adds its weight to the mattress as well.

With all these factors, over 10 or so years, a 90 pound mattress can gain around 20 pounds.
