My name is Robert Collinsworth. I write this to relay a story for my son and granddaughters that you may be interested in for your show. I will try to be as factual as possible. Everything that I state here can be backed up by paperwork and/or recordings.
My son (also Robert Collinsworth) had a set of twins out of wedlock with a woman April 19, 2005. The mother’s name is Vanessa Helms, who is also the stepdaughter of a Detective on Richmond Police Department in Richmond, California. The stepfather’s name is Michael Rood.
From the minute that Ms Helms found out that she was pregnant the trouble started. The first sign of trouble happened on January 19, 2005 when my son received a threatening voicemail on his phone from Detective Rood threatening to have my son thrown in “state prison” for “unlawful sexual intercourse”. He could avoid all this trouble if he “stepped up and been a man” over a set of twins whose paternity was in question and paid Detective Rood back for a car that broke-down while my son was driving it. The next morning a complaint was filed at Brentwood Police Department against my son for rape and statutory rape. My son is SIX WEEKS older than Ms Helms. She also stated that it was a forced rape on that report which was four months AFTER the conception. The threats I still have recorded and the complaint the following day is a matter of public record at Brentwood Police Department.
In order to keep my son out of jail I had to retain the legal services of William Gagan out of San Ramon California for $2,400 of my own money.
My son was not allowed to see his twin daughters (Gia and Lucia) until after the following which will turn your stomach. In fact, my son NEVER got to see his daughter Lucia and never will.
On August 15, 2005 when the girls were 4 months old there was a report filed to Contra Costa Children and Family Service that the twins were being “neglected” and “put at risk”. A quick investigation led to a conclusion that the complaint was unfounded. Two weeks later, on September 5, 2009 one Granddaughter (Lucia) was DEAD. An autopsy concluded that the death was from “failure to thrive” or “SIDS”.
Approximately six weeks after the C&FS investigation closed my surviving granddaughter Gia showed up at an Emergency Room in Antioch, California with FIVE broken bones and a subdural hematoma. The broken bones were at various stages of healing which the doctors concluded were a sign of “CONSISTENT” and “SEVERE” abuse. She was also severely malnourished. Gia was immediately removed from the care of the mother and put into foster care. She immediately began to put on weight and began to thrive under the care of the foster mother, Ms. Gloria Siebert.
Now things get interesting.
The mother was understandably charged with aggravated child abuse. But nobody seemed to know what happened to Gia while she was in the custody of the mother IN THE HOME OF A POLICE HOMICIDE DETECTIVE. She was allowed by the Contra Costa County District Attorney to plead this down to simple “neglect”. The woman did ZERO time behind bars.
My son had to fight the system and justify himself in order to get HIS DAUGHTER out of foster care. He and our family are the people that have never harmed this girl nor allowed harm to come to her.
In June of 2007 the “Honorable” Lois Haight, the same judge that allowed the plea bargain to simple neglect, at the recommendation of Contra Costa County C&FS ruled that the mother and father would share 50⁄50 custody of this child. My son had followed there rules and jumped through hoops and has NEVER so much as spanked this little girl.
Judge Haight did have the good sense to order that my granddaughter NEVER be in the home of Detective Rood or his wife. That order was ignored the first week that Ms Helms had my granddaughter. I wonder why the judge stated that but never a reason.
In April of this year the mother did not show up at the designated time and place to give Gia to my son. No phone calls or contact were made. She retained an attorney, Peter Williams of Walnut Creek, CA to try and sue my son for custody. When they went to court in July of this year the judge again reinforced the 50⁄50 custody.
I’m going to pause to present questions that have never been answered to my satisfaction.
How much influence does a police detective have on a District Attorney in his county to do a “favor” for a family member?
How much sway does that same detective have on court officers?
Does that same detective who deals on a daily basis with medical examiners have the ability to have a favor done in a wrongful death?
If this detective is not above using his influence to threaten a 19 year-old kid for perceived injustices like child support (job of Family Court) or alleged damaged property (civil and/or small claims court), is he also not morally above using his influence to protect his family from the law that the rest of us are subject to?
Was my granddaughter Lucia in the custody of her mother and in Detective Rood’s home when she died?
Was my granddaughter Gia in the custody of her mother and in the home of Detective Rood when these injuries occurred? Was he ever questioned?
Why did a judge give a court order that this baby can’t be in the home of the maternal grandparents, one of which is a peace officer, but none of them were named in the criminal complaint?
How does a baby sustain those types of injuries, she almost died, and the mother walk away with a misdemeanor and not spend a minute in hand-cuffs or jail?
Where does a single, unemployed mother of four (three other children since she had “our” twins) get the money to pay an attorney? She pays the bill to her attorney, on time IN CASH. My son had to represent himself in court.
