I'm in California. I'm for the death penalty, but I don't see the point of having it if we're not using it. CA has 700+ inmates on death row. In the last 30 years, there have been about 13 executions. I bet if these 700 inmates had been in the general population rather than on Death Row, more than 13 of that group of 700 would have died from inmate-on-inmate violence. San Quentin is overcrowded, but if you're on death row, you get a largish single cell, better access to phones.
