The news reports I read said there were few other people on the beach at the time. Of course, it only takes one.
The ocean is quick though. I'm in Northern California and many of the beaches here are treacherous. I've seen people walking along the beach just at the point where where the waves are washing up. All of a sudden a wave comes in at mid-calf level and it's hard to keep your balance. Even an adult can get knocked down with a wave that size as the water goes back out. If Caleigh was at all near the water line, I'm afraid that's what happened. As sad as that is, at least death would have been fairly quick. If it was an abduction - I always hope the abductor is someone who wanted a child and is treating the child well - that rarely seems to happen (thinking of poor Tori).
