afa the OP....I'd have refused to let the child take the detention, period.

Then the principal and the teacher and I would have had a quick meeting to straighten things out. My son had a "teacher" like this in High School, and we got to the bottom of the teachers personality disorder pretty quickly. He was an A student except for this one class which he got D's and F's in.
