Shame is a pretty good tool. Look at it like this; most of the reason kids do stupid shit is to look cool to their friends, take that away or let them know that is what will happen and its a good way to keep them on the straight and narrow without actually doing it to them. If they know they will end up looking like an asshole to their friends instead of Cool Hand Luke they will think twice.
I never had to use corperal punishment with my kids, started way early with positive reinforcement to get them to do what I wanted, then took away stuff that was important to them when they didn't. Load in a little manual labor and it works for most kids.
