I dropped my friend off at the airport this morning. He's a history buff and comes from a deep military family; moved around all of his childhood. Yesterday, we went to the San Francisco cemetary at the Presidio. 35,000 military persons are buried there, starting with those who served in the Mexican American War in 1846.

I like the hiking, barbecues and partying that comes with Memorial Day weekend, but agree that it's important to remember what it's really all about.
