If the parents don't mind sitting through a longer ceremony, I think they ought to let people cheer and bring the next student forward when the cheering subsides. But, depending on the size of the school, nobody should bitch if the commencement takes an extra hour or more.
300-500 students times 5 minutes each. You do the math.
The worst people get up after their child's name is called instead of sitting through the entire ceremony. That's klassy, too.
