Lesbian love affairs with a politician's wife, a landmark libel lawsuit and a play that intertwined Biblical passages with sexual innuendo added up to a salacious drama that gripped the British public in the early 1900s.

Now, with a new play detailing the drama of a scandal brings the life and loves of dancer Maud Allan back into the spotlight nearly a century after her initial fame.

Well before she was known for her sensual dances, Allan was already fleeing controversy.

Born Beulah Maude Durrant in Toronto, Canada, she spent her childhood in San Francisco before leaving for Germany in 1895 at age 22 to study music.

While abroad, her brother Theodore killed two girls inside a California church and instantly became notorious throughout the United States. He was found guilty and sentenced to death by hanging.
